Comment:
I love early Cheap Trick and so does SQ's sister (well, she at least likes to sing "Surrender" at karaoke)--thus this substantially revised mix from 2001 is her slightly belated birthday present. Does music really get much better than "He's a Whore," the live version of "I Want You to Want Me," "Southern Girls," "Downed," "Oh Caroline" or "Surrender"? And does Robin Zander not have one of the greatest rock 'n' roll voices? Last tracks cut: "I Can't Take It," "Clock Strikes Ten," "Ain't That a Shame (live)," "Stiff Competition," "High Roller," and (yes, I'm serious) "Tonight It's You" (a fine song, lousy production).Feedback:
I think Cheap Trick is one of a few groups that are perhaps overrated by the common listener and underrated by the rock literati (ahem, ahem). Slightly kitschy, but a great rock band nevertheless and worthy of a single-artist compilation.
I love "At Budokan" and that Dream Police track has been trying to work its way on to a mix the last couple of months.
Yeah, the live disc is pretty brilliant and for straight ahead rovk and roll you can't really go wrong with these guys. Also, Bun E. Carlos is one of my favorite names in music.
Great picks.
Cheap Trick? On the whole I'm unsure and unaware ( I know tk 20 at least ). I reckon, should a link be forthcoming I'll give this a listen, and hopefully enjoy..
You got everything off the first album EXCEPT "The Ballad of T.V. Violence (I'm Not The Only Boy)"?! Sacrilege, I say!! By the way, I actually put that song on my very first mix disc, so in the greater scheme of the universe as a whole, I'd say things balance out pretty nicely!
i actually saw these guys a few years ago, & boy rob zander's voice is STILL in excellent shape - these guys were catchy, hooky power pop at its finest during their heyday - nice work with this one
As Sammy said.
Every one's a hit on my radio.
While I think "Surrender" is one of the greatest radio hits of all time (and something I still listen to on a regular basis), and a few of their other tunes are tasty indeed (yes, of course, "I Want You To Want Me"), I have to admit that their admiration in power pop critical circles is a bit bewildering. But maybe I need to just keep trying.
great band, esp the early years
Oh damn, looks very interesting, but i have to beside that i have never heard Cheap Trick i guess...
Hot mix! Hard to argue with these picks, as most are taken from their classic first four studio albums. Things got a bit more inconsistant after that. Will have to see them live before I die.
Mostly undeniable tunes here. "want you to want me" is one of those songs I'd kill to have written. But I don't think I'd care much for it if I'd only heard the studio version. Saw them a few years ago - still a powerhouse live group, hella-fun.
And in the middle of the punk explosion I bought the Cheap Trick LP with I Want You To Want Me on. Can't remember why but I never went any further with C.Trick.Maybe I missed out.
