Comment:
George Michael was a bigger star in this year than this mix would imply (he had 4 hits in the top 5). I was only able to work 1 of the 4 into this mix. I was going to use his song Monkey, but decided that Kissing a Fool (a personal favorite) actually worked better in the 13 track slot. Part of the reason for the switch was hemizen's comments which made me rethink some of my omissions. Another one I almost switched was the last track for "Need You Tonight" by INXS which was a slightly bigger hit and a bit less controversial, but didn't mix as well I felt. Other personal favorites on here are tracks 3 & 11.Pet Shop Boys and INXS are the only groups on this mix where more than one of their songs was used. I've decided to use a picture of INXS' album in which they had 4 songs charting at #7 or better for this year.A few artists I avoided: Michael Jackson doing The Way You Make Me Feel, Man in The Mirror, or Dirty Diana, Phil Collins doing Groovy Kind of Love, Guns & Roses doing Sweet Child of Mine, Poison doing Every Rose Has Its Thorn, Whitney Houston doing So Emotional, Where do Broken Hearts Go, or One Moment in Time, UB40 doing Red Red Wine, Def Leppard doing Pour Some Sugar on Me or Love Bites, Hall & Oates doing Everything Your Heart Desires, and U2 doing Desire. As usual you can click the link on the first song title to access the mix.<!-- -->
Feedback:
Liking Got My Mind Set on You, Don't Be Cruel, Pour Some Sugar on Me and Desire from that year.
We just got Rickroll'd with Track 6. X*D~
But there's plenty of sweet stuff in there - and bonus points for putting Kissing a Fool in there! Good call!

Proof I think that the charts rarely reflect the best in music. My favourite track is the Bangles one and that's a cover. Many of the artists did better stuff in other years although the Rick Ghastley track was probably his best.
Fancy another quiz, Joe? Only 2 tracks here hit No1 in the UK.. Which two? 3 & 13 are my personal faves here ( ssh, I'm a closet George Michael fan.. )
Your secret is safe with me sammy ;-) I believe tracks 11 & 14 are the ones you are talking about. Or they are the closest I found to reaching #1 in the UK ( everyhit.com lists them as charting in at #2 ). I believe everything else didn't make it into the top 5; many not even into the top 40. Perhaps this is another example of the Brits knowing how to show us folks in the states how to pick good songs.
Sam, if you are confessing, I am closet Pet Shop Boys fan. I liked them since they said they picked the title for their first album to improve Americans' manners. "I would like the Pet Shop Boys album Please."
No, they both hit no2 over here Joe. What might have thrown you were the 2 in question were both hits over here in '87.. 6 & 8 were the No1 hits..
And Derek, I'm no closet PSB fan, I'll shout it from the rooftops!!

have to agree with KathrynandRupert here; this list isn't nearly as interesting to me as your 6-31 list or, especially, the one with songs peaking at #32 to #92 on the US charts in '88. Pet Shop Boys, Bangles and Terence Trent D'arby are the ones I like best here, but the rest seem carefully designed to appeal to the generic masses.
actually, I think that Anita Baker song is pretty.
