Comment:
A second stab at one of the greatest indie pop bands of the past decade. Decided to update my old single-disc version, amending it to include their two more recent albums (this year's superb pop extravaganza New Magnetic Wonder and 2002's overly-noisy yet underrated bubblegum-punk Velocity of Sound) plus the Robert Schneider side project that came in between them (Ulysses, a mono, live-in-studio return to his lo-fi roots). I weighed sticking with a single disc (which would have been the yummiest 80 minutes imaginable), but opted instead for an all-inclusive 2-cd mix that is pretty much all the Apples you could ever want (yet is still fun from start to finish). I largely avoided their early ep's (later compiled on cd), which sounded like a slightly more poppy Guided by Voices, picking up after Schneider discovered his muse, blending Sgt. Pepper and Pet Sounds-derived low-budget studio wizardry with an ear for bubblegum, garage, and unadulterated radio-friendly hook-crazy pop. Which adds up to more great songs than you can shake a stick at.Sadly, frontman Schneider and drummer Hilarie Sidney have divorced, and her chirpy background vox and occasional leads will no longer be gracing future albums.

Feedback:
Bummer about Bob and Hilarie--I had no idea. I must admit that these folks once meant a lot to me, but most of their records that I've owned have now been relegated to various trade bins in the Pittsburgh areas. I'll always have a soft spot for "Tidal Wave" (and most of Fun Trick Noisemaker), though, as well as "The Rainbow."
great to see so many of my favorites here - i can't think of another band offhand who are more adept at mixing that bubblegum pop with a lo-fi aesthetic so successfully - in an ideal world, these would all be top 10 hits
I only have the new album and wallpaper reverie so there is much more to get to know from this band.
I still have that Marbles album somewhere, haven't listened to it much...found it on a whim at Rasputin...great mix tho! I <3 Apples In Stereo.
Minus a few tracks, I haven't fancied much from Mr. Schneider since Discovery. The new album really bored me. With that said though, all those singles, EP's and albums Schneider released from 1992 to 2000 were bloody amazing, and you hit upon mostly everything I like from the albums (sadly not from the EP's and some Secret Square tracks).
Back when I use to frequent the E6 Townhall, Robert Schneider paid a visit and sent everyone two mp3's he and Will Cullen Hart made in the early 90's. They're worth a listen if you haven't already heard them yourself. A cool artifact: track 1 and track 2.

Oh, and, he also posted some tracks from 1987! Pretty decent stuff: track 1, track 2 and track 3.
Exhaustive indeed! Not sure if I could handle hearing this in one sitting, as Mr. Schneider's high whiney voice grates on my ears after awhile. But in small doses (and with some vocal help from Hilarie), I'll be one happy camper!
What Moe said. Great songs, slightly annoying vocals. Still, The Rainbow is one great tune, and everything here is super poppy and infectious.
