Comment:
As I watched a three-hour Byrds documentary ("The Byrds: Under Review") last week, I just couldn't help but feel a nagging desire to revise my old double-disc Byrds set (for perhaps the third time?). In addition to including tracks from both Byrdmaniax and Farther Along (which I had more or less neglected before), and including more tracks from the fantastic Untitled and the very good Ballad of Easy Rider, I gave this fine band (who have been nestled firmly around #10 on my all-time list for as long as I can remember) the "double-disc" anthology treatment that I've been giving to other key artists (rather than compiling up to four separate chronological discs). At any rate, as far as traditional comments go, I'll just say that (again) I absolutely love this band and that over the years they had perhaps the most talented set of singer-songwriters (in order of importance to me: Gene Clark, Gram Parsons, David Crosby, Jim/Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, and Gene Parsons, although 3, 4 and 5 on that list are completely neck-and-neck) that were ever assembled under one moniker. Who's *your* favorite Byrd? As could possibly be predicted, the list of "last tracks cut" is quite huge: "Willin'", "All I Really Want to Do", "Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man", "Dolphin Smile", "C.T.A.-102", "King Apathy III", "Fido", "My Back Pages", "Precious Kate", "Well Come Back Home", "Take a Whiff on Me", "Boston", "I Come and Stand at Every Door", "Truck Stop Girl", "It's No Use", "Wild Mountain Thyme" and "Don't Doubt Yourself, Babe."Feedback:
great stuff and an amzing job you've done
does gram parsons count as a favorite byrd? superb job here, rob - when's that rolling stones revision coming up? ;)
continue to update the classics. you do such a great job. thanks!
Excellent.
Nothing wrong with McGuinn, but I have to agree with your order on the Byrds. Gene Clark was magic, Parsons - ni hablar - and Crosby pre-hard drugs had such potential.
Great stuff, Rob. Agree with your singer / songwriter order (although Gene and Gram are pretty much a wash for me.) Don't know much on side 2 but side 1 is a corker.
Awesome. That alternate version of "Pale Blue" is a particular favorite.
Fabulous, of course. Looks pretty comparable to my own 2-cd version, though I lean a bit more heavily than you (and other posters here) in the McGuinn direction; this was particularly the case on later albums, when I pretty much only cared for his contributions. Nice to see a strong showing for Notorious Byrd Brothers, my personal favorite (and one of my favorite albums by any artist). I'm a bit less of a fan of Gram's work, and would trade a few of his tunes for their delightful take on Dylan's "You Ain't Going Nowhere," but that aside, a fine tribute to a band that, IMHO, should always be uttered alongside the Beatles, Stones, Who, Velvets, Beach Boys and Kinks when listing the most crucial 60s acts.
I agree with your order of the Byrds and your picks. I've never heard of the documentary, which will now become my mission...great mix, Sir!
I'm stunned by the time and effort applied to mixes such as this. Ashamed to admit I only have 2 Byrds albums, must remedy that situation immediately!
Wonderful collection and you can't go wrong with any of their stuff. I was always a big Byrds fan and dutifully bought each album as it appeared right up to Byrdmaniax. I've really loved the box sets and expanded reissues with all the alternate versions.
Thanks again for the latest lesson from the school of classic rock! Excellent stuff!!!
Great band, great job. I don't know if I have a favourite Byrd, maybe McGuinn. But lots of favourites here. I miss 'Wild Mountain Thyme' tho.
I reckon my Favourie Byrd is Elisha Cuthbert. She's hot in 24. But seriously, ho ho, this is as comprehensive as can be I reckon. I'd have found room for 'My Back Pages', in fact it probably would've been first on the Team Sheet, but that's me, and this is great..
Great, Great band. Mr. Spaceman is an all time favorite here.
Brilliant.I come to a stop with the Byrds when they went countryfied (it's probably an English prejudice) so no Sweetheart Of The Rodeo for me but the previous LP's are overloaded with quality.Though they were never as big as they should have been in the UK their influence echoed down the years,Orange Juice would have been badly diluted if the Byrds hadn't existed.
Absolutely no argument about these guys ability. Brilliant, top to tail.
Undeniable, clearly. The first 7 albums are practically flawless - how many bands can say that? I made a single disc mix long ago, and I almost never listen to it - I'd rather listen to complete albums through. They're that great. The Gene Clark stuff here ranks highest, though Hillman's tracks are 2 of my faves as well. And Clarence White is about the most brilliant guitarist imaginable in a rock and roll setting.
I imagine this is pretty stellar, although like Cliff, I have far less of their stuff than appropriate. I really should take some rectification measures, too...
