Single Artist

Going Up, Down, All Around
(in the Fall of 1968)
Comment:
I would have liked to start the mix with a live version of Down on Me, but the one I wanted was released in 1972, so I ended up using the studio version that was issued in 1968.Aretha Franklin had her best year in the charts in 1968 and she appropriately is the only artist that has more than one song in the mix (and of course the pic is of her). The Title of the mix is also from lyrics in her song See Saw (track 13).Where the songs have more than one chart number, the second one reflects how the song did on the R&B charts. Two songs, tracks 15 & 26, were both issued on 11/30/68 and peaked during the week ending 1/4/69. Songs that didn't make it into the mix (78m17s in length) were: Till and You are My Special Angel by the Vogues, Put Your Head on My Shoulder by the Lettermen, Little Green Apples by O.C. Smith, Help Yourself by Tom Jones, I Love How You Love Me by Bobby Vinton, The Straight Life by Bobby Goldsboro, Indian Reservation by Don Fardon, Over You by Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, Bang-Shang-A-Lang by the Archies, Hi-Heel Sneakers by Jose Feliciano, Sweet Blindness by the 5th Dimension, Alfie by Eivets Rednow, and Peace of Mind by Nancy Wilson. To access the mix, just click the link on the first song title.<!-- -->

Feedback:
The Shadows of Knight were mighty cool, but your comments made me want to hear Little Green Apples...
Another great year. Love Down On Me, Midnight Confessions, Hooked On A Feeling, Bring It On Home To Me, Crown of Creation, Abraham, Martin and John, Slip Away, I Wish It Would Rain, Little Green Apples, I Love How You Love Me, Over You. My most vivid memories of 1968 occured earlier in the year. Going into Social Studies class and finding out Martin Luther King was shot and then later having my mom come into my room and telling me R.F.K. was dead. I remember saying "Oh not again".
Janis Joplin was so fiercely original! Check out a YouTube video of her singing with Tom Jones (curiously, it works):

lots of great tunes here
Ah, the sound of Clarence Carter... love that man... I had the chance to run spotlight for him a few years back at a show in Elkhart, IN. I did not know he was blind, so after he was lead to the mike, I just locked down the mini-trooper, and enjoyed his under-rated and oft neglected talents. My kind of mix!
Another killer collection Joe. Hooked on a Feeling and Little Green Apples are my strogest memories from that year.
ooh yes, like this!! unfortunately I wasn't even an idea in 1968, but most of the music I listen too comes from around there. lovin' the two Aretha tracks of course...miss 'Ree is my favourite singer in the world...I was impressed you knew and owned "my song!" right on. I also loved the Gladys Knight and Otis Redding tracks...yes! and good old Clarance :)
