Comment:

A Double CD set, and pretty self explanatory..
Here's a hypothetical situation for you all. You're about to be dumped on a desert island for, say, 3 years. Don't worry, there'll be plenty of Food & Drink, Cigarettes and hunky men / scantily clad women for you. But here's the bad news, you can only take your entire record/CD collection from one of these 2 countries. Tough isn't it? So what's it going to be. 3 years without the Beatles. No Dylan or Velvets for 36 months. Choice is yours...
Obviously other countries make great music, so don't pull me up on that, unless you really have to.. And before I go, my stance? Well, obviously I love the Beatles. But there's a lack of any decent Soul or Jazz from over here. AND I believe I could listen to Big Star all day every day. And then there's Motown.. And Nuggets vol1 is better than vol 2. So, even though I'm a Brit, there'll be no flag waving here. It's one-nil to the States...

My vote goes to the Brits. There is just no way I could survive for three years without The Smiths, Cure, JD, Stone Roses, Blur, Beatles, J&MC or Radiohead.

sammy, PLEASE send me a copy of this - please please please please please - this is mind-blowingly excellent from tip-top to rock bottom - MOTW, mix of the month, mix of the year - WOW! as for the question: as tough as it is, i have to go with the good ol' brits - i just can't live with the beatles & the smiths, add to that elvis costello, the kinks, the stones & radiohead, & the choice is clear, for me if not for you. sure i would miss dylan, the velvets, nirvana, neil young, the beach boys & the like - but british pop music is peerless in my eyes (& ears). so anyways, about that copy again...

Radiohead are British reason enough to choose the other side of the pond! That said I used to think music was one area in which Brits (I refrain from the term WE Brits cos I don't consider myself a Brit now, preferring to call myself European!!!) ruled the waves. Close inspection reveals however that I buy far more American music that Brit these days, nuff said!

I agree with Terry, but I really like the contrasting side 1 with side 2: Bowie vs. Dylan, Kinks vs. Chuck, Pixies vs. Zombies, Joy Division vs. Marvin Gaye, Blur vs. Byrds. Not sure how intentional that was, but it makes for an interesting comparison. I look forward to ordering this playlist in track order and hear the matchups. Cheers, salud y well-played!

I don't know where I stand on that issue, but this is one of the best mixes that you've ever compiled. Absolutely killer.

Ah, if it weren't for Radiohead, it would be Britain hands down. I could not live without The Beatles or The Smiths. That aside, fantastic mix!

Has it been 181 minutes already? (waiting time on Rapid-Share between d/l's + it asked me for my Passport)
Terrific mix, Sam...aren't you glad we split the country all those years ago? We'd never have made this much great music if we were all still livin' in the U.K.!

Many great choices (especially side 2). I particularly enjoyed hearing Love's "My Little Red Book". It has been awhile since I heard it and must have forgotten about it when I made my mixes for 1966. And then there is that Elvis Presley tune... It escaped my ears until I heard it on your mix (first time it has been used on AOTM as well). Thanks for the links! And when it comes to my choice between the two countries, I must side with the U.S. over the U.K. Just checked the ratio of the two on my last two mixes (of the first track off of various artist's debut LPs) and discovered that I chose this side of the pond three times more often than on your side. But I must admit that the U.K. has been a real inspiration on us over here (but I guess that goes both ways). Cheers, and keep up the excellent mixing!

I think the US have gained an unfair advantage by kicking off side 2 with one of the best songs ever written and what kicks off the UK side? A rather inconsequential Beatles track,IMHO.
Still choose the UK because of Joy Division,Clash,Kinks,Stones,Smiths,Beatles,Costello,Freddie and the Dreamers,Bucks Fizz.....................................um,maybe I'll change my decision........no,I remembered the Desperate Bicycles so I'm off to a desert island with the best of British.Glorious mix,can we have France versus Germany next?

Everyone wins in this mix, except for France that is. Might have to give the edge to the UK however, as it's just an itty bitty country compared to the massive States. The latest UK census showed that one in seventeen people is a rock star.

I'm gonna have to give a slight edge to rhe Americans, though this mix is a great argument against isolationism! Well done

This international fooker is s/m/a/s/h/i/n/g!
[Insert Neneh Cherry saying: "Y'know wha' I mean?"]
Sammy, if you had included Fleetwood Mac would they have appeared on Disc One (ie. "Morning Rain") and on Disc Two (ie. "Go Your Own Way")? Thoughts anyone?!??

Tough call, but I'd probably go with good ol US of A only because of the VU and all those indie albums in the 90s.

Tough call but I'll take the Americans. You kind of seal the deal with the first track!

I saw this earlier but didn't get a chance to comment before it shot the top 100. now I've had a chance to ponder the question at hand. First of all, Brits and Yanks aside, I wouldn't last a day without the Brazilians. So I'll pretend that Sabrina Malheiros is popping 'round my desert isle once in a while to sing me a song and make me a bowl of homemade feijoada. OK, this is a stunner of a mix over all, but based on the artists represented here, I'd have to side with the Americans. Although that stretch from The Zombies through to The Jam nearly swayed me, but most of the brits here are ones that I'm not particularly fond of....but than you mentioned motown, and that got me thinking about styles versus individual performers. If I chose USA than no british library, like Alan Hawkshaw, or Brian Bennet and no british prog/psych like Hawkwind or Soft Machine. Choose UK and no Stax/Volt or deep funk. I guess what I'm saying is the choice is impossible , at least for me....

god, Sam. this is like "Sophie's Choice." but based solely on what you've put together here, your little island got the long straw in our office draw. so many favorites from over the years... and really love "Colours," "Street Life" and "Far Gone and Out" from UK, which I hadn't heard much before... and great Dylan, Byrds, Yo La Tengo, Billie Holiday tunes from my homeland. a real fun set to listen to here.

Two nations divided by a common language, as one of your compatriots once said . . . Fortunately the music washes back & forth across the ocean, & since there's a wi-fi connection on my desert island, I don't have to choose! Many thanks for laying out the alternatives so splendidly, though . . . I want it all!
