Comment:
What was that you said, Moe? ;-) Seriously, I'd been thinking of re-tooling my double-disc Zep set for awhile and Moe's comment on my Black Sabbath mix gave me an additional impetus to finally do so. Plus, I'm so firmly on the fence on the "Sabbath-vs.-Zep" debate (as in "Who is the greatest proto-metal band?") that it's only fitting to post these within 24 hours of one another. As I've said on plenty of occasions around here, thanks to the vocals and lyrics of Robert Plant (who, in all fairness, seems to be a down-to-earth, friendly sort of gent with great taste in other bands' music), I'm not even sure I can call myself a Zeppelin "fan." That said, I own all of their records on vinyl, own the first six on CD, and have dubbed copies of the rest plus the live collections because the *band*--John Bonham, John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page--are so undeniable. Last tracks cut: "Since I've Been Loving You", "The Song Remains the Same", "Four Sticks", "Hats Off to (Roy) Harper", and "Good Times Bad Times."Feedback:
Wow, I'm glad you did this, because I miss all the Zeppelin I sold off in the extremes of my youthful impetuousness. Can't wait to get a copy!!!
I think What is and what should never be is their greatest, at least it is my personal favorite. I agree with you on the personnel.
While not a fan of the genre, Led Zeppelin was the definitive heavy metal band. I love everything through Houses of the Holy and Led Zeppelin II is one my all time favorite albums. I hardly listen to them any more due to 70's over play but this would be a great listen.
i'm with you re:robert plant, rob - if they had a vocalist who wasn't basically a hippie version of christina aguilera, i'd absolutely adore this band - as it stands, i really love their first 4 albums & like the remaining albums thereafter - i have to admit i go through phases where i can't listen to anything else though, as i really do love the general bluesy vibe of the band, as you said - you hit most of my favorites ("tangerine," "that's the way," "going to california," "dazed & confused," "what is & what should never be"), though i am troubled by the absence of "thank you," "ramble on," "babe i'm gonna leave you" & "since i've been loving you."
there is no sabbath vs zep debate in these parts. zep in a landslide. i am with anthony on the absences.
No "Stairway to Heaven"? WTF? ;)
I found the definition of "overplayed" when I heard "Stairway" as a 50 yr-old Brazilian woman's ringtone, nonetheless, I wouldn't have been able to leave it off. Great stuff here, Rob. Nice to see something from "In Through the Out Door" make it, a very unerrated album imho.
haha @ Herr Mohr... good band!
Not a big fan of either Sabbath or Zepp. My fave track of zepp's however is 'Down By The Seaside,' unsurprisingly not to be found here!
Led Zeppelin make my skin crawl. Seriously. Black Sabbath cool, though!
I tried to get into Zep when I was teenager but they didn't engross me.Plant's histrionic screeching is a pain in the earhole. They are undoubtedly a great heavy rock band but great heavy rock bands rarely rock my boat. Now I liked your Butthole Surfers mix.
hey, what happened to that guy that posted a zillion Zep boolegs here?
