Comment:
Well, I thought that I was just about through with doing mixes of the late '60s. Figured that I'd been there and done that, but I dug deeper and came up with this mix, with all the songs making the Billboard Top 100, but none of them charting better than #43. These songs would no doubt rarely make it onto a play list at an Oldies radio station. The average chart ranking of all the songs in this mix comes out to #70.7 (about the same as the mean value of the range of #43 to #100).Songs that didn't make it into the mix: Buffalo Springfield's Bluebird (too long), Elvis Presley's There's Always Me, Jean & The Darlings How Can You Mistreat the One You Love, The Staple Singers' version of For What It's Worth, Tom Jones' (It Looks Like) I'll Never Fall In Love Again, Dean Martin's In The Misty Moonlight, Frank Sinatra's This Town, Glen Campbell's Gentle On My Mind, Jr. Walker & The All Stars' Shoot Your Shot, Lulu's version of Shout, The Byrds' Have You Seen Her Face, The Wildweeds' No Good to Cry, Wilson Pickett's You Can't Stand Alone, and the Youngbloods' Grizzly Bear (none of them charting better than #41). All of the songs, with the exception of the first, weren't used on prior mixes (the 1st one showed up on my 2 CD mix of Songs from San Francisco Bay in it's Heyday). Thanks to Sammyg123 & Moe for track 10 (I believe it was a pick by the former) from their alternating dj mix (posted by moe on 9/19/2007 entitled "would you like some of my tangerine"). The picture I chose is of the second LP by Sergio Mendes & Brazil '66, from which I used two of their tracks (both produced by Herb Alpert). As usual, the mix can be accessed by clicking the link on the first song title (if the first link isn't working then try the one on the second song title).<!-- -->

Some very nice hidden gems here. I like it.
Love your fascination with chart positions.I have loved pop chart books since I was 13. Am amazed that I Am A Walrus was ever released as a single but then I think in the US that B sides can chart and it was the B side of Hello Goodbye.Equally surprising is seeing the wonderful Paper Sun stalling at no.94.It was a big hit in the UK. Wonderful idea to highlight the great stuff that lurks at the wrong end of the chart.
dead end street! i've been addicted to that song lately.
Yeah, also love your Chart Position fascinations. Surprising none of these did well in the Charts as there are some belters on here.
I just listened to Moby Grape and Mr. Fantasy yesterday so I am insync with you hear. Gentle On My Mind, Shoot Your Shot, Shout and Have You Seen Her Face all would have made my cut. Love this mix.
Looks fantastic but alas, your link has expired...
This looks very nice, love the Lou Rawls. Just the kind of oddball mix that dills my pickle.
crikey ! I would have thought that some of these wouldhave charted higher - having said that, sales were higher then . . . . .
Splendid mix. Lots I'm loving here.
Had to listen to an awful *awful* english radio station when I worked in an archive for a year - it seemed to play only the top 10 records from the 60s to the 80s - still can't hear Tina's 'Simply the Best' without convulsions... if only this had been the playlist.
