Comment:

Believe it or not, I never even owned an Oasis album until a couple weeks ago. Somehow I managed to wholly ignore them back when they had their moment(s) as the next big thing. Maybe it was the hype, maybe the radio overplay, maybe just the sadness I felt every time I heard them and wondered why the far superior Stone Roses never got nearly as much attention. Whatever it was, I opted to take a pass on the band. Which, in hindsight, was kinda silly. Because they were pretty good. Not great, but pretty good. And what's wrong with that? Over the course of a few albums (and, far more interestingly, a fistful of singles/ep's), they managed to churn out some decent enough tracks with worthy hooks. That said, a little Oasis goes a long way. Yes, I could have easily stretched this to 2 discs, particularly if I included a number of latter-day lesser-known songs and b-sides; but, honestly, the songs really tend to blur together over the course of an hour. A couple things at play there. First, production-wise, they seem blind to dynamic variation; every song, from the ballads to the rockers, is big and boomy (with few exceptions). Second, in their quest for anthem after anthem, they tend to lock onto a chorus and run it into the ground. Do all their songs really deserve 5+ minutes (or 9+ in some cases)? I ended up editing the heck out of many of these, chopping off the last 2 minutes and fading early, and I still only fit 17 songs onto the mix.
Anyway, it's a decent enough sampler; I don't have the greatest hits album, but I'm guessing it probably looks a lot like this. Drawn largely from their 3 key albums from '94-'97 and some contemporaneous singles, with only a couple later tracks. Good 'nuff for now.

I liked Oasis pre-Wonderwall and espcially when they kept their mouths shut. Actually, I probably would have enjoyed the Wonderwall era better had they kept their mouths shut. I thought Live Forever was the cat's pajamas at the time. I think they set the record for number of Beatles references in a song, didn't they?

An Oasis mix without "Acquiesce," "Talk Tonight", and "Take Me Away" is a complete mystery to me. But hey, to each his own. I think their best moments (pulled almost entirely from their first two albums and attendant singles) are tremendously great, despite the hype and despite their loutish personalities. After that, though, it's pretty slim pickings, although the last album was a return to form, of sorts.

i'm with rob on pretty much everything - "talk tonight" is my favorite oasis track, so its absence here is unfathomable to my mind - other than that, you've picked some pretty great tracks from their prime period

Nice job! I've always liked Oasis(despite having to defend myself frequently), and still think "Supersonic" is a great song - full of ego and brashness. But then again, weren't most of their songs full of that?

Lots of favorite Oasis tracks. Many here. They got lots of baggage but can certainly rock.
