Comment:

Disc 3 of my triple-disc chronological Purple One anthology, motivated by my dissatisfaction with my single-disc comp that I did six years ago (and which is now deleted). Originally, I thought everything would fit on two discs, but I was wrong. Prince is someone that I don't think about as often as I should, mostly due to his annoying personal eccentricities. That said, he certainly was one of modern music's real visionaries--a guy who really created his own style of music. In order to include more songs, I did some judicious editing, cutting both the first 45 seconds or so of "Eye No" and the final minute. Last tracks cut from this volume: "The Question of U" and "Cindy C."

Looking at this period, I think that Prince's image unfortunately overwhelms his music. In many ways, he was like the Dylan of his generation musically, a true synchretist, as much as Bob was 20 years prior, but then all the eccentricities (not to MJ levels, but pretty odd anyway) and his tendency to put style over substance (for a guy with very substantial songs) is probably what turned me off of him in the late 80s. But, hell, the guy invented IMing, didn't he? (I would die 4 U, Feel U Up, The Question of U, Sexy M.F., etc.)

Didn't Slade invent IMing some ten years earlier?!

I saw the title of this set and had to check it out. As a bonafide Prince geek, I'm always interested in the selections people make. My 3 cd set would likely be different, but yours deserves props for its solid periodization, and the inclusion of many deep cuts. Kudos for not forgetting the massively underrated Black Album!

Well, let's just say Prince mainstreamed it...

Is he not the father of audio communism and the New Distribution?
