Comment:

The less-than-exciting sequel to my 2-cd compilation of R.E.M.'s early years (1980-1987), this one captures the Warner Brothers years. The title (from one of many forgettable songs from 1998's Up) is only partially meant as a dig; there were some fine albums and essential songs after the major label switch, though I have to confess that the 3 albums since drummer Bill Berry left have been rather dull (and are thus poorly represented here). I suppose I could have done them better justice by waiting until the release of their next album (currently due early 2008) as, based on the tracks they previewed at some rehearsal shows this summer, it may actually be a return to form (or, at least, a return to the amped-up rocking of Monster).
But I kinda wanted to get this one done with, figuring I can update it next year. Plenty of merit here, though, unlike the prior collection, I leaned much more heavily on covers (found on various tribute albums and b-sides). I still find Green, Monster, and New Adventures in HiFi a bit underrated (but commercial breakthrough albums Out Of Time and Automatic for the People a bit overrated) -- not that there aren't some truly great tracks on all of them, albeit nothing that changed my life like on their first few albums.

I must admit that most of this period doesn't interest me much, but you've hit a few of my very favorites ("Me in Honey," "At My Most Beautiful," "Strange Currencies" and "E-Bow the Letter") while skipping the rest of my favorites ("Be Mine", "Nightswimming", "Country Feedback"). As I always say, though, to each his own. ;-)

automatic for the people is actually one of my favorite albums of the 90's, so i can't really hate on this period too much (despite the obvious dip in quality); you tackled much of my favorites from the era though, especially "at my most beautiful," as rob previously mentioned, & "imitation of life," which i must admit i have a soft spot for...

Less exciting, yes, but I think R.E.M. reached a great mastery during this period. They matured as well as anybody in the business. I always liked about everything they did, as long as we bury Shinny Happy People deep in Yucca Mountain.

Still lots of great songs on this and of course at least one classic album from that time. Just heard their new live album this weekend which sounds pretty good on initial listen. but focuses on recent stuff.

Nice choice of covers - like the Cohen and Erickson ones especially. And despite some lackluster albums during this period, I've always felt New Adventures In Hi-Fi was criminally underrated.

I can't hardly listen to much post-"Green" R.E.M. anymore. I tired out on "Out Of Time", "Automatic..." really soured me against them, and although "Monster" had a few moments, I really hated "Hi Fi" and have been pretty apathetic since. I still like some of the covers they did in the early nineties, so it is nice to see those represented here. Not surprisingly, I like your other collection much more.

I think Mesh's opinion is a popular one. However I loved and still love Out Of Time & Automatic. I believe Monster was more hit than miss.. And yes, after New Adventures it has been all downhill ( although I loved E-Bow & Leave off that album ) and bits and bobs since..

A.K.A. Songs from all the R.E.M. CDs you can find for a (Peter) buck at the swap meet. Yes, the post Berry releases have been a bit spotty, but you've salvaged most of the better tracks. Great to see an assortment of covers represented. I still have my issue of Sassy with an unplayed R.E.M. flexi of Dark Globe.
