Comment:
For SwankQueen, who recently told me that she wasn't all that familar with Radiohead (!). This is actually the third version of this mix that I've done--one from '01, one from '03 (both single-disc comps), and now this double-disc set. I know that I've said this repeatedly, but I have to say it again: I don't want to like Radiohead. Perhaps it's a misperception on my part, but they seem to have an aura of self-importance (maybe it's their album covers.... or the "Oh you like our band, eh? Well here's our new album, Kid A, where we *really* 'challenge' you by relegating our band's greatest asset--whizz-kid guitarist Jonny Greenwood--to keyboards!" stunt.... or the ever-moody, perpetually-unsmiling portraits of the band in music magazines) that usually stops me just short of thinking of myself as a Radiohead "fan." Then they release a new album--in this case, this year's In Rainbows--and it's invariably one of my favorite albums of the year. (The fact that their August '97 Pittsburgh appearance--with Teenage Fanclub opening--is one of the greatest live shows that I've ever seen doesn't hurt, either.) At any rate, I not only love every song on these two discs, but really like almost everything I've heard by them post-Pablo Honey (which, try as I might, I just cannot enjoy--a bit too much Bono for these ears). I have almost no b-sides or rarities from which to pick (there are entirely too many import singles with which to contend on my limited budget, so I just gave up on that quest early in their career), so almost all of these tracks are from the full-length releases. That said, if anyone has a particular non-album track that they think I missed, I'd love to hear it. Last tracks cut: "Bones" and "Scatterbrain."Feedback:
I like what I hear musically from Radiohead, though I try to remain in my vacuum here in the great midwest and not actually pay attention to what may come out of their mouths at other times.Great overview, Rob, as per usual.
I agree with your sentiments wholeheartedly. They are smug, but at least they create quality music to back it up.
Thanks, Rob!
THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS ROB! you know what? fuck all the haters - for my money, the greatest band from the past 20 years (post-smiths, that is). yeah, yeah, i know i'll take alot of heat for that from the anti-radiohead elite, but i just think they're brilliant & i can't help it. i count pretty much every one of their albums (with the exception of their debut--you nailed it, too much bono for me) as modern day classics, & i count both ok computer & kid a as some of the greatest albums ever recorded. & no, that's not hyperbole - they're that great. (again, i'll take the heat from all the anti-radiohead people who are sure to crawl out of the woodworks & blast not only them as "overrated," but their fans as "pretentious indie wankers"). oh yeah, & in rainbows is the best album of 2007. okay, i'll get off my soapbox now.
Very nice overview, Sir.
I saw Radiohead at Glastonbury in June 1997, and that particular set was voted the greatest gig of all time recently in ( British publication ) Q magazine recently. So they must have been on the form of their lives that summer. I love(d) Radiohead, although with each release my interest decreased somewhat... But blow me, if they haven't released one of the best albums of 2007. And I don't think anyone was expecting that....
You know, I've tried and tried but I just can't get into Radiohead. I wish I could , all my friends love them. My personal opinions aside, the thing that amazes me the most about these guys is the extremes they inspire in people. I mean, nobody is on the fence here, I never hear anyone say "Meh , I can take 'em or leave 'em". It seems you either love 'em or hate 'em.
I'd probably have to classify myself as a casual Radiohead fan, but I wholeheartedly agree with anthony when it comes to OK Compter. And In Rainbows was quite the pleasant surprise as well. Well done with this collection!
Yet to hear the new LP. Kathryn doesn't have anything to do with them even though they come from her home town.Pablo Honey has its moments. The Bends is the one that really launches my rocket ship. OK Computer sometimes leans a little too close to prog though No Surprises is sublime. And Kid A....... well I never trespassed within its vicinity. One day I'll give it a try.....
