Comment:

Some songs that didn't make the cut this time: Curtis Mayfield's Freddie's Dead, Danny O'Keefe's Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues, Jackson Browne's Rock Me on The Water, Mott the Hoople's All the Young Dudes, Raspberries' Go All The Way, The Stylistics' Stone in Love With You, The Trammps' Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart, and Uriah Heep's Easy Living. All the songs chosen here were from the second half of '72. The picture is of Tower of Power, a group formed in Oakland in 1968 and track 12 was their first charted hit. I of course now reside in Oakland so they are now a very local group for me (but I always liked them anyway). As usual, the mix is available via the link on the first song title (if the 1st link is slow or not working, try the link on the second song title). It is 76m57s long (without spaces between the tracks). For those of you who would rather not use the first track on a CD, I've made available a replacement song, "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart" by the Trammps (#64) (click on the 3rd song title to download) that can be inserted between tracks 12 & 13.

This looks absolutely fabulous. Grooving on the opening two.

I like a lot of this, but it is hard for me to separate the first guy from his proclivities...

Thanks doowad... I knew nothing about Gary Glitter except that he did much better in his native England than he did in the U.S. (had 18 top 40 hits there from 1972-1984 and only 2 here). Now I know the sordid details which were uncovered beginning in 1999. But of course we are here viewing him through the looking glass of 1972 when he might have been seen by many as just a wee bit eccentric. Poor Van Morrison; I've sandwiched him between two later known debauched characters (but of course at the time these songs were produced nobody would have minded).

I dig it, Joe -- and the Tower of Power cut dazzles!

Yeah, I am always one who tries to not mind the bollocks (such as my continued patience with U2, Prince and others) and just enjoy the music, but as a parent, Glitter and MJ hit pretty rock-bottom...

Love that Van track. Tower of Power has been a favorite band of mine to see live since the early eighties.

Thanks Mark, I love that Van the Man track too! Originally it was going to be the first track, but I later added the GG track ahead of it, tentatively numbering it 00. Now wish I'd left it out of the mix, but musically it still works well as an opener (in retrospect, just wish the year I made the mix was pre-1999; I feel embarrassed that I was so in the dark).

Hey, Joe, I love that end run, from about track 14, especially the Rick Nelson/Al Green contrast, that's a beauty, eh?

Thanks doowad! Yeah, I think that string of tunes turned out real well... Most of them, tracks 14-18 were second stringers, but I'm glad I used them in the order I picked them. Another second stringer, which was at the top of my almost used list, was Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart by The Trammps. I'm making that tune available via the link on the 3rd song title as a replacement for what you and probably others (and now myself at this point) find discomforting due to the performers despicable acts. You can use the new track between the 12th and 13th tracks and then remove the first track.

Being English I am always fascinated by your mixes. What captivates the US is sometimes treated with complete indifference over here. Bands like Tower of Power and Sailcat made no impact here, but it's odd to think that Gary Glitter had some success in the US. I do wonder that if he had made music of the quality say of Ray Davies or Van Morrison whether he would have been committed to the dustbin of history so swiftly. Not that I condone his abhorrent crimes. A very good mix.

From a purely musical point of view, the opener is a cracker. Infact the first three are all very strong. Three Dog Night were another band who made little or no impression over here. Looks like they had much more success in the States. Fine looking mix overall, Joe..
