Comment:

An updated version of an old single-disc mix, adding selections from their last few releases. Sad to say, I suspect that this fine Dutch band will be overlooked when the contributions of the great indie acts of the 90's are given their due. And, sure, maybe they didn't quite have the cred of, say, Pavement, Sebadoh, Guided by Voices, Yo La Tengo, and the other post-Nirvana bands that (briefly) threatened to capture alternative radio/video back in the mid-90s, but they had a slew of great songs and albums that certainly warrant their inclusion alongside those other innovators. Their '92 debut, Palomine, remains one of my all-time favorite albums, with Carol van Dijk's smoky vocals and catchy melodies battling against a wall of grunge guitars, like Joni Mitchell fronting Crazy Horse. The next two revisited the same formula, perhaps wearing it a bit thin but with plenty of great songs nonetheless.
After that it got a little less predictable, for better & worse. Embarking on a brief tour doing nothing but Velvet Underground covers was actually a pretty cool move, though releasing a live album culled from those shows was a somewhat strange (and not exactly forward-looking) move (albeit one that still offered its pleasures). When they got back to the studio, they tweaked the formula, cleaning up the distorted guitars and adding elements of keyboard-driven pop and light jazz, with Carol coming across as more and more of a torch singer. Sometimes they got the mix right (particularly on the eclectic Log 22), but there were undeniably some dull spots, and last year's largely acoustic Bare Stripped Naked was a bit of a bummer. Still, they've outlived most of their '90's peers and, though arguably of minimal relevance these days, there are still enough bright spots in their catalog to make for a solid mix.

crikey, you must be a real fan to stick with them for this long . . . sorry to say that I don't know them at all. A deluxe 2cd edition is enough to go get me exploring, however. Thanks for that . . .

This is fascinating. I remember Bettie Serveet being quite a hit with the critics in their early days but somehow I avoided them. Suffice to say you have tweeked my curiosity and I'll be scouring the secondhand shops for their stuff especially the first LP. There should be more mixes dedicated to low profile bands rather than the Beatles, Stones etc. Myself I've considered doing a Kitchens Of Distinction CD.

I am in Gobi's camp, but a little education never did a body harm...

i've actually never heard of them, & your description really piques my interest, along with the fact that it looks like they've covered one of my favorite dylan songs (unless that's a totally different song) - but what REALLY piques my interest is that woman in the middle, yowza, do you think she's single? i jest of course.
