Comment:
This is the third of a three-disc, chronological set covering the seven years (1967-74) by this band that matters to me. Although I really can't stand much of anything that they or any of their side projects did (live or studio) from 1975's Blues for Allah until the present and absolutely detest the uber-lame jam band culture that they spawned, I absolutely *love* their early work. Despite the fact that I have plenty of live shows from this period, for the purposes of this mix, all of the versions here are the "standard", officially-released versions from that time.Feedback:
This would be interesting to hear, just to take these songs out of context. I have the sneaking suspicion that I would only listen up to about track 8, or at least skip to Scarlet Begonias. The Dead should stick to patchouli, not politics. Congratulations for taking on another icon and breaking it down for the rest of us...
Great trio here Rob. For all of my adventures at Dead Shows, I really need to have more in my collection.
I know little or nothing of the Dead I'm afraid. Maybe one day that will all change, but for now...
You certainly cover the prime years. I've all their albums from that period and saw them a few times back then but always considered them second tier. Never got the dead head thing.
What does a deadhead say when he runs out of grass?
Don't know the Dead, don't know the answer to Doowad's joke either..oh I feel so inadequate. Can't fault your dedication to a cause, Rob.
Not much of a fan of the "jam band" genre, but your triple disc set has got me reconsidering on the Dead.
This obviously took a lot of work, Rob. I commend you. I agree with you in regards to the earliest material being the best. I've heard pretty much everything, not counting the countless bootlegs, but it all comes down to the first couple of studio albums and their earliest live shows were pretty ...out there... as well. After that , it's a bit like flogging a dead horse, really.
Nice one Rob, thanks for the time and effort you put into this; a great tribute to The Dead at their best.
