Comment:
"If you've never heard me play before, my name's Todd Snider. I've been driving around fifteen years, makin' this shit up and singin' it for anybody that'll listen to it. Some of it's sad, some of it's funny, some of it's short, some of it's longer than others, and sometimes I'll go on for as many as eighteen minutes in between the songs. Sometimes I'll tell a story about why I came up with one song, and then I'll come back to town a few months later and tell a whole other story about it. So if I do that, I'm sorry."I could go on a long-winded treatise on Todd Snider's music, but his own description seems most fitting, and much more succinct. And while some of his songs are sad and others are funny, some have the relatively unique distinction of being both at the same time, much like John Prine's. In fact, Snider has molded himself rather successfully in Prine's image, but with distinct rock `n' roll tendencies. Alongside the more wistful, folky ballads sit some raucous barnburners too. And "Beer Run" (not included here) while it has increased his audience, has also given him an unfair rap as a comedy performer to some. Many of his songs seem to give equal, and surprising, poignancy to a variety of topics - be it support groups, absent friends, or the troubles of belonging to Mike Tyson's entourage (no, really).I first heard "Talkin' Seattle Grunge Rock Blues" on the radio back in '98 or '99, but didn't really care for many of the other songs on the album. Then, by happenstance, I caught his live show a couple of years later, which really showed him in his element. Snider's stage presence is unassuming but very charismatic and, much like Prine, he enhances many of his numbers with anecdotes. Much of his strength, I think, lies in acoustic performance, and I've included several live and acoustic versions here in lieu of, or in some cases in addition to, the album versions. Some of those album cuts just come off as a little too polished for me, not to mention they tend to obscure some good lyrics.Incidentally, "If Tomorrow Never Comes" is not the Kent Blazy-penned song of the same name, made famous by Garth Brooks. It is, however, purposefully titled, and references Blazy's "borrowing" from Todd's "Beer Run" to write a very similar song for Garth Brooks and George Jones ("You can't prove anything but one thing's true/If you can steal from me, I can steal from you."). Mix title taken from "Age Like Wine."Feedback:
Excellent! In the mix I'm currently working on, I'm using his "I can drink any girl pretty". Snider is a genius.
I picked up a compilation of his a couple of years back and have been hooked since. He has a bunch of albums and I grab them when I can. Nice collection here.
I have liked most everything I have heard from Mr. Snider and look forward to eventually hearing this ;-)
