Comment:

I've always been an admirer of RetroJoe's obsession with chart positions, on both sides of the pond, and his dedication to the cause. A few weeks ago I approached him with the idea of doing an alternating DJ mix with a slight difference - he would pick a Number One single from the billboard chart, I'd return with a track from the UK singles chart that peaked at No2, and so on and so forth...
Joe came back with the idea of sticking to the time period 1973-1975. Knowing there is good music everywhere if you look hard enough, I duly agreed. The next restriction placed upon the mix was that each track must have faired at least 20 places worse in the opposing country. This made things trickier; indeed one of my choices because of this rule, was a track I'd never heard before (tk14). Having said all this, the mix turned out better than I'd expected, here is the result. Thanks to Joe for the Journey, he'll be posting the 'mirror mix' at pretty much the same time I hope... Enjoy!

You scared me for a second with the "Journey" comment ;-) But as usual with both mixers, I like practically everything I know and look forward to learning the rest!

What this proves is that we in the UK had the better tunes. And we had the better cars too. ;-). Will our american friends on AOTM get the significance of your cool cover?

Well , I'm not British or American, but the cover is from "Life on Mars" , right? At least thats what it's been called here, sometimes series names get changed. I love alot of this and lots I haven't heard. Nice stuff.

I don't see any Journey on either of these. Journey is quite good from this period, Thier first three albums before Steve Perry are great, prog jazz....trust your Skipper.

Interesting concept. Especially the 20 place rule. I've always liked Joes facination with chart positions and throughout the mid to late sixties I was an avid collector of those little radio station weekly charts that came out as little flyers. By the seventies I didn't pay attention to charts anymore. The UK chart thing here adds a whole different dimension. Nice job guys.

Like the AM radio playlist of my dreams. Too bad for us that the best of these were overseas sensations. That's a damn nice ride you guys got there.

Brilliant concept and end result. The opening three, 13 and the closing pair are all-time favs and I haven't heard Gilbert in decades.

as Mark Petruccelli once said, "Brilliant concept and end result." (it's what I was thinking anyway.) favorites are tracks that reached #6 in the UK (such an incredible voice!), #10 in the UK, #14 in the UK and #15 in the US. very cool, fellas, and looking forward to the other part tomorrow. and thanks for the Brazilian Sendspace link, Sam. got it now...
