Comment:
About 5 years back I made a 2-cd mix of Elvis tunes (here and here), arranged alphabetically, from throughout his career. But when it came right down to it, while that made for a more interesting mix than a straight chronology, I found that I was either in the mood for early Elvis or late Elvis, and just haven't gotten much play out of that one. So here's a revamp, the chronological Elvis, split into two 2-cd sets.Obviously this one's the real keeper; while Elvis has had plenty of gems since '82, his first 5-6 years were just drop-dead perfect. Straight out of the box in '77 with a stunning debut, followed by 5 more albums (setting aside an album of country & honky-tonk covers that is amusing but inessential) that were, if anything, even better. How many artists of the modern era can make such a claim? Maybe R.E.M., maybe the Talking Heads; not many more that come to mind. Couple his biting, genius lyrics with one of the finest backing bands of the punk/new-wave era, and this is just non-stop glory. Hard to pick a fave, though I'm partial towards 1980's Motown-influenced Get Happy (a bit of a cheat, as the high number of short tracks on that one means that it's got a larger number of great tunes, even if overall it's on par with his other albums). But then you've got "Beyond Belief" on '82's Imperial Bedroom, my favorite Elvis song (though that album saw the first glimmer of the more downbeat, soulful Elvis of later albums -- appealing to some but less so to me).
The mix of post-82 Elvis is almost ready and will be up soon.
Funny, I cross-checked this against Rob Conroy's (recently updated) series of Elvis mixes and noticed that, while we shared some observations, our picks from each album were almost diametrically opposed. Weird.

Feedback:
Great overview, not that we expected anything any less.
great, "Beyond Belief" may be my fave EC tune too
Wow. Although I love Elvis quite a bit, you're right--our taste within the albums of his that we like best is diametrically opposed. You almost invariably skip my couple favorite tracks for each record.... As always, to each his own... different strokes/different folks, etc. ... and a tip of the hat to your passion and desire to compile these mixes.
Stellar! Very nice job...
time to update my elvis mix (no impersonators), as i obviously couldn't find my copy of imperial bedroom when i made it. i am awaiting to later years disc as i own so little beyond this era.
elvis costello is one of my two or three all-time favorite songwriters/lyricists, & one of my top five favorite artists of all-time - in fact, i'm listening to him right now as i type this. i'd be hard-pressed to think of a post-60's artist with a more impressive string of albums than his '77-'87 run (minus punch the clock & goodbye cruel world). i actually attempted to create a definitive single-disc overview of the same era, & worked on it for about a month, before frustratingly realizing it was impossible - when considering album tracks, one-off singles, collabs & b-sides, even a two-disc set seems difficult. my favorite albums would be get happy, followed closely by king of america - a bit disappointed that you stopped short of the latter album, but that's nitpicking, since everything here is gold. another great round-up, marc.
Personally I like my Elvis angry therefore Radio Radio is one of my favourites but I find it hard to choose one track above all others. Also I'd love to hear Men Called Uncle, could that be a rewrite about Kuryakin and Solo :). Can't think of many artists with such consistency but I might suggest Throwing Muses or Heavenly, though they never made 6 LPs. Oh did I forget to say that this sublime.
That this is sublime. Typos are so easy to make :)
Great project. While I own alot of EC this and the later mix point out so many holes in my collection.
I'm with anthony here. EC has always been one of my all time favorites and I still listen to everything from this period. I've even replaced the albums with those bonus disc versions. I've never tried to make a best of from these albums but just keep playing the CDs. However, this collection does look great.
