Comment:

Hot on the heels of volume one (1977-1982), here's the follow-up package. It should be obvious where my loyalties lie, as I reserved the first 2 discs for a mere 6-year span while somehow squeezing 23 years (!) of music onto the second 2-cd mix.
That said, things start out strong enough, with 1983's jazzed/funked-up Punch The Clock, IMHO the last truly great Elvis album (and, more fairly, one more appropriately lumped in with the first mix, though musically it's much more consistent with his latter period). After that, sad to say, the huge drop-off in consistency began. Not that any of his albums are truly terrible, and a few are pretty solid (particularly 1994's underrated Brutal Youth). And even the weaker albums have a few standout tracks each, ranging from the Americana of King of America (critically-acclaimed but never a personal favorite) to the harder-rocking Blood & Chocolate. Indeed, while this can't approach the quality of his early years, there's obviously a great deal more variety (as one would expect when covering over two decades of work); though, I have to admit, this mix definitely cherry-picks Elvis's rock & roll tunes, leaving his more torch-song-leaning balladry and jazz-tinged croonings (found on a number of side projects) for another day.

Punch the Clock the "last truly great Elvis album"?!? Are you kidding me? (You're clearly forgetting about King of America, Blood & Chocolate and--yes, I'm saying it!--Spike?) Let me recommend that you listen to KoA's (obviously IMHO) best moments (most of which, save for "The Big Light" and "Brilliant Mistake," you've skipped) again before dismissing it. Start with "Indoor Fireworks," then move to "Sleep of the Just," and then on to "I'll Wear It Proudly".... ;-) In the meantime, we are again diametrically opposed. That said, this is a lovely mix series, regardless. :-)

koa is all that i am truly familiar with in this era and it is top five for me with the other four all being in the early years.

rob snatched the words right out of my mouth - king of america is absolutely brilliant, & as i mentioned on the first disc, my second-favorite elvis album. "indoor fireworks," "sleep of the just," "the big light," "i'll wear it proudly," "glitter gulch," & "brilliant mistake" are among his crowning achievements. in fact, that's the album i'm listening to right now.

Punch The Clock was never a personal favourite. I don't know how you can dismiss All This Useless Beauty which nearly matches some of his best early Lps. Still loads on here to like though.

I've continued my love of EC through this period too and have to agree with Rob and anthony here. KoA is a great album. Some of his later albums have been a little spotty but that has more to do with his later facination with ballads. I really like The Delivery Man and that duet album with Allen Toussaint. I saw EC perform recently. A mostly acoustic set with just his keyboard player in tow. A litter different sound but still great. This collection is great too.
