Comment:
Or, "What a Way to Start a Career!" All these tracks are, of course, the opening tracks off the artists' debut albums. The inspiration (and, by default, the title, I guess) comes from the same Mojo/Q magazine special edition on prog-rock that already inspired my first prog mix, giving the following pithy summary of Emerson, Lake & Palmer's "The Barbarian": "Album one, track one -- and a fervent declaration of intent. Bartok's austere piano piece souped up as the European classical tradition meets the muscularity and flash of electric rock."I've tried to include here not just any "fervent declarations of intent", but ones that ended up defining the artists' careers in some way: whether by becoming signature songs (King Crimson, Joan Baez), more famous than perhaps even the artist would have chosen (Tom Waits, Van Morrison) or just plain awesome (Richard Thompson LIVE IN FEAR LIVE IN FEAR LIVE IN FEAR, Nico). Oh, and the artists also tend to be ones that I enjoy. Total time: 54:38.
Feedback:
an abangaku mix was way past due. i am ashamedly unfamiliar with the richard thompson tune having never found henry the human fly. i can live without the asia, otherwise what i know is stellar. i think the doors and king crimson in particular define your thought behind the mix. thanks!
hey there tom, good to "see" you again, and i certainly feel "thankful" for your comments on this mix.... i've heard that richard thompson song referred to as a "cackle from the graveyard", for me it's quite the propitious overture to his entire solo career. he shouts "live in fear, live in fear" like a mantra, it's really nuts. i've seen "henry the human fly" basically in expensive import racks, and eventually just ended up copying it from the public library (shhh!!!). as for the Asia, well, the politic way to approach it i guess would be to say that the song serves the valuable function of linking different musical styles on this mix. but, on the other hand, i have to admit i'm continually in a state of wonder about what this band ridiculously constructed of pieces of King Crimson, Yes and ELP is really going on about. the fascinating thing for me is that their fans seem to follow them as if they actually were a prog band... i'm definitely going to keep looking for something there. actually, too, i really like "Heat of the Moment", i think it's wonderfully catchy... even if a whole album about sexual jealousy is really, really wearying. (are Asia the Eagles of the 80's, then, perhaps?)
