Comment:

Since I recently revamped my single-disc John Lennon and triple-disc Paul McCartney solo mixes [see entries under "I don't believe in Beatles" and "People pass me by on my imaginary street (Discs 1-3)", respectively, from August and fall '01 for more details], I thought I'd give compiling George a try. Upon embarking, I was immediately faced with the problem that had caused me to avoid doing this before: to me, he *never* came close to repeating the songwriting quality and recording sound of his initial solo LP (although "Give Me Love" is pretty fantastic) and the majority of my George appreciation stops in the early '80s. That said, I love these songs. Last tracks cut: "Miss O'Dell", "Handle with Care", "Be Here Now", "Crackerbox Palace", and "All Those Years Ago."

Beatle personnel comps are ten a penny on this site :). Extremely commendable because, unlike the other Harrison mix, you included What Is Life. Good stuff.

Yeah, George is my favorite Beatle. What is life reminds me of being a kid in the 70's. This is a great comp.

I'm with you 100% on your comments; however much I appreciated his contributions to the Beatles canon, it was hard to escape the conclusion that his limited number of Beatles songs wasn't simply due to being up against the greatest songwriting team in history, but the simple fact that he was never a prolific writers of great songs. I think there's about 80 minutes of essential solo material out there, and you've got most of it right here. To this date I find "What Is Life" and "Awaiting On You All" to be among the finest work of any solo Beatle. I have a soft spot for "Crackerbox Palace," but aside from that cut I'm with you.

all things must pass is a classic, & i quite like living in the material world - other than that, he's pretty spotty, though his jaunty, sometimes majestic pop is captured well here

George is probably my third favourite Beatle, which, by default, puts him in my list of Top 10 people ever, or something like that.. Must admit to only owning "All Things Must Pass" by him, but what an album that is...

Kudos for I'd Have You Anytime, great mix picks for the only Beatle songwriter egoless enough to write with Bob.

My favorites, "Smokey" and "Far East Man" are suspiciously absent, but this still looks rather fab.

Boy, looks like I've missed a lot of good stuff here at AotM. Hope you don't mind my deluge of comments. I agree that George never topped ATMP, although I like "George Harrison" and "Brainwashed" a lot. The rest of his albums you have to cherry-pick. That "Beware of ABKCO" boot sure is essential, isn't it? I have a two disc set someone compiled of rarities (b-sides, soundtrack cuts, comp tracks, etc.). The quality is excellent, if you're interested.
