Comment:
Part of a continuing effort to expand some old single artist mixes to do some real justice to the ol' back catalog. (As always, walking the line between a brief, near-perfect sampler that introduces someone to an artist, and a more comprehensive mix that allows me to stash my collection in boxes, with much more emphasis on the latter these days.)Having divided my Kinks tunes into two 2-cd mixes, this is obviously the keeper of the bunch (though the early 70's had a wealth of strong and often under-appreciated material). This is primarily arranged chronologically by recording date, though with their two decade-closing masterpieces, Village Green Preservation Society and Arthur, I dropped that in order to keep the flow of the original albums. I lean fairly heavily on those two albums, as they're my favorites, but was able to do so without losing any of the key early singles or album tracks (with room for a couple rarities from the vinyl-only Great Lost Kinks Album.
Interestingly, I managed to rip everything I wanted and it miraculously fit perfectly onto 4 discs with a clean break from the 60s to the 70s. Sometimes the karma works out, I guess.

Feedback:
You are becoming my S.A.M hero. If you are not posting a delux 2 cd review of a hof career it's a single disc of highlights of someone new. thanks!
i have been listening to alot of kinks lately, so this finds me at a perfect time - ray davies is my all-time favorite songwriter, the kinks are the fourth greatest band in pop music history, & this music is simply beautifully transcendent & bittersweet in ways i can only thank the lord for bestowing upon us. i probably would have stretched this to at least lola vs..., but hey, i'm not complaining. way too many favorites here to name, so suffice it to say this is excellent.
Although you and I have had minor disagreements re: the merits of certain Kinks material in the past, I have to say that this is a pretty great double-disc sampler of this period. Personally, I'd lose "Arthur," "Last of the Steam-Powered Trains," and "You're Looking Fine," replacing them with "Young and Innocent Days" (my 3rd-favorite Kinks tune),"Starstruck," and "Holiday in Waikiki," respectively, but to each his own....
Can't go wrong with the Kinks. Great band for all generations to discover and re-discover.
FLAWLESS. GREATEST ... BAND .... EVER.
pure excellence! they're one of my favorite bands, village green is also my favorite kinks album.
one of my all time favorite bands. grea collection.
