Lush Life & Other Jazz Favorites
Comment:
This mix is for my Dad for Christmas (along with a Christmas mix that I'll be posting in a couple of days). This compilation includes 4 versions of Lush Life (two vocals and two instrumentals). This song has haunted me since the first time I heard Sarah Vaughan sing it (track 14). Of the 14 vocals featured here, 12 are by women. Other noteworthy songs are Blues in the Night, Night & Day, In the Still of the Night, and Body & Soul (all 4 had two versions used for each song). Vocalists of note are Peggy Lee (tracks 1 & 13) and Ella Fitzgerald (tracks 11 & 19). For the musicians, noteworthy is Coleman Hawkins who is featured on tracks 7 & 12 and Oscar Peterson who I used for tracks 5 & 17. One song that isn't a jazz number is track 15, which even though I had a couple of versions that leaned toward jazz, they didn't mix as well. The jazz purists can remove that song from the mix if they like. As usual you can access this mix by clicking the link on the first song title. The picture is of Billy Strayhorn, who wrote Lush Life from 1933 to 1938. <!-- -->
Feedback:
Beautiful.
Lush Life is indeed, a beautiful song. As is the rest of this mix. Wonderful.
Love Trane's take on Lush Life and love a lot here but that Hawkins' version of Body & Soul is monumental.
I'm sure that Dad will love this . . . I would.
Very nice. Lush Life is a song that you could make a one song mix with all different versions and it would sound great.
