Comment:
The second of a two-volume set tracing my favorite songs in descending order (I usually post 2-cd mixes as a single [cassette] mix, but this one felt more natural being divied across two postings). This was the significantly tougher of the two volumes to make. First, there are a lot of artists whom I love but for whom I have a hard time settling on a particular stand-out track (Pavement, Yo La Tengo, the Feelies, Guided By Voices, etc.), so I end up falling back more on sentimental favorites that could change depending on my mood (and the available space on the cd). Second, I had to make some cuts -- some of the prog favorites were just too long (Genesis' "The Musical Box," Crimson's "20th Century Schizoid Man"); some bands just got forced out by lack of space (The Connells). This time around, there are a fair number of tracks that come from albums that are lower on my list (i.e. Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures is one of my favorite albums, but I'm partial to the moody "Decades" from Closer (a toss-up for inclusion with the single "Atmosphere"); Pavement's Slanted & Enchanted is another favorite album, but "Cut Your Hair" (from Crooked Rain is a better stand-alone tune).
Anyway, that's it for now. I suppose the next project, for the sake of completeness, would be a mix of tracks from my favorite albums, which would have some overlap but a fair amount of variance as well.
Feedback:
Marvellous. I helped Kathryn discover that S.Youth song, she always had an irrational aversion to them. OK I'm going to be brave here and suggest Liza Radley instead of Ghosts, Disorder instead of Decades and Range Life instead of Cut Your Hair. I know it's pointless but I couldn't resist it.
Many selections that are beyond reproach. My hat is off to you for tackling such a daunting task.
As before.... the Byrds song is about as good as music gets. Still, a few surprises (that might demand some justification :-) Still, a great project - and I'm not in a nitpicky mood.
I'd LOVE to see how this type of project compares, given the birthyear of the mixer. Your choices clearly place you as coming of age in the 80s. And mine would be similar enough - now that you and Rob have thrown down the gauntlet, I"ll have to give it a try; if only my cd's weren't still in boxes (after moving to Baltimore 6 months ago).

To each his own, it's all unknown. I applaud you for taking on this daunting task. But Powderfinger and Wasn't Born to follow are as good as they got.
On this volume 6,7,11,20 and 22 would make the cut for me.
Man I couldn't even begin to contemplate this now (though Gobi and me gave it a shot at our fave 20 of all time about 10 years ago) I reckon but 2 tracks from back then would make the cut now! How the hell do you pick a fave Neil Young track or TFC to that matter. Those 2 are bout the only two bands that would make it into any selection of mine but that's not to say that this ain't an outstanding mix!!!
allt his is of course very great but it intresting to see no black artists what so ever
Greil Marcus would be proud. We agree on the Beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkel, Modern Lovers, Neil Young, Roxy Music, Wire, and Husker Du choices 100%. Both volumes are very good.
now i have another mix to work on. the selection process must have been agonizing.
There's tons I could quibble with here, but this is obviously a fine, fine mix (although I *have* to say that "Cut Your Hair" is nowhere *near* my favorite Pavement tune). I DO absolutely back you up on the Huskers tune (but you knew this), the Sebadoh tune (which will probably make volume 4 or 5 of my series--yes, there's more to come), the Byrds song (it's probably my third- or fourth-favorite) and the TFC song (not that it'll make my list, per se, but it's unreproachable).
Most interesting. As one of the older (as in more aged) Splitters, I do think Sean's idea is an interesting one.
I've always, always, always been a sucker for a good list ! And this is a great list.I've tried similar before and have often given up although Cliff and I did some tapes many years back. One of those lists that I great to argue over. Well done.
So I hope you have all these songs loaded in an I-Pod by the door, so you can grab it in the event of a natural disaster -- I would guess an earthquake would be your best (or worst) bet based on where you live. I know a mix like this is a challenge, especially from someone who has hundreds of thousands of songs in his colletion, so I admire your efforts here. You've picked my favorite songs by Wire, Sebadoh and Pavement (though Summer Babe comes close), and I'm fond of your other selections as well -- at least the ones I know.
taken as a whole the 2 discs are unbeatable
Another great collection and one of these days I'll try again.
So much great music. One day I'll get round to it...
I love Powderfinger.
