Comment:
A collection of my favorite thrift store finds of the christian persuasion, the culmination of many rainy Sunday afternoons spent in the musty aisles of Goodwill in search of oddball private pressings by christian hillbillies. (I reckon I ought to pray for sunshine now that nearly half my ipod is inhabited by artists from the Myrrh record label, home of Amy Grant). It's a mixed bag with a little something for everyone: zealotrock, god-fearing disco, conventcore, righteous country, evangelopop, goodie-folk, knee-bender funk, jesus cheese -- and a few public service announcements brought to you by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Cover stars: The Anita Gospel Singers
See more images, read about the artists, and download the mix right here. Enjoy!
Feedback:
I'm sure this is unbelievably frightening (much like the cover), yet somehow I'll make it through the mix, dear Lord, and see some value in it because it is an Orchid Mix (a rare treat around these parts) and, as such, is Good.
If the music is half as scary as the write-ups, I will be transformed.
Yikes...I'll echo Mark's sentiments. Looks fascinating though; I wait reverently for the download to finish.
Surely that's 3 blokes in bad drag outfits! Can't abide anthing to do with Christianity.
Already a fan of D.R. Hooker and The New Creation Band. Thanks for showing me the light and sending me all the way down the road to Damascus with the rest.
alma cogan took the words right out of my mouth
Yaaay111 An Orchid mix! Holy shit, this looks great. Right up my alley.
Orchid has emerged from the sepulcher! this mix is dynamite, sister. I was especially drawn to the kazoos of "Eternity Ahead," but there were many favorites here, like The Sons of Light, Barry McGuire, the Medical Mission Sisters, Joe Wise, Gary & Janis, Evie (good lord, how many Evie LPs have I passed over in the thrift stores of America. what have I done!? I had no idea what I was missing), Ralph Carmichael & Pat Boone, Carman, The Swordsmen, Lee Castro and Gary S. Paxton's chilling and dramatic rally against abortion. I swear that I'll NEVER have an abortion now. and as a recent 7th Day Adventist convert, I felt a really warm glow inside when I heard the slogans of my faith represented so frequently on your mix. it's just a shame there isn't a "Religious Music" category yet on AotM - or maybe "The Music of Christ." thanks for sharing this one, oh "Mighty O."
Hallelujah ! Praise be ! and all other suitable expletives . . . . you've got some staying power to wade through what is undoubtedly mainly a crock of (well intentioned) shite to find the good stuff. (well, I assume this is the good stuff - I actually know nothing here, so once again, who am I to comment ?)
haha whoa carman...has he ever been on a mix before? the truth is...carman was my first ever concert...
Many congrats on Mix Ov Da Week. Thoroughly deserved I'm sure, alas I can't download anything from 'Ponytone'. What am I doing wrong?
congrats on MOTW - well deserved!
This doesn't seem nearly as Flannery O'Connor-esque as anticipated. Cool concept. Amen!
God's mix of the week. Happy that you found salvation at the thrift store. They don't call it the Salvation Army for nothing. Congratulations to you and your blessed I-Pod. Amen sister Christian.
Congrats. I spent some time looking at the pictures and reading the comments. A very intense collection.
Great job, I'm surprised to not see Dr. BLT commenting on this since he is a big Barry McGuire fan.
This is awesome!
Right on, sister!
"Jesus cheese"? Yikes!
I have to admit , other than a couple of weird albums , I have completely overlooked all of the religious albums at my local thrift shops. I know there is some crazy stuff to be had, thats why I'm kind of afraid to open that door. I'm glad some one else does though. This is great, Congratulations!
I have to echo Skipper here, I'm not very well versed in this style either. Which is precisely why it is so good to find a mix like this to throw some light on my own blind spots! Looks excellent, and congratulations on a well-deserved MotM.
Erm, MotW - but then, this might as well be Mix of the Month, so there you go.
Wow... this looks fantastic. This is going on my iPod immediately. Maybe it will help me out through my current period of doubt. Also, Barry McGuire for the win.
One doesn't come across a mix as truly original and inspired as this one very often! I almost missed it, thanks to tornadoZ for making it MotW. You created an mix from material most people would not touch, and you turned it into a masterpiece that is fun to listen to. A great survey of religious music; folk art for the ears.
Ah, thrift stores sometimes produce unexpected treasures. I've dropped off a lot of used vinyl and taken back a fair share. Nice mix.
