Desert Island Discs:
The Conroy/Kulcher Collection
Comment:
Introductory notes (by Marc a.k.a. Pop Kulcher):After Rob Conroy recently updated his 2-cd collection of his favorite songs (see here and here), he kindly invited me to join him in a combined effort at an alternating DJ mix or our respective favorites. However, inspired by his mixes, I instead opted to post my own 2-cd collection of my favorite tunes (see here and here). In the alternative, we opted to co-author a mix of selections from each of our dozen favorite albums. We had two overlapping picks (the Velvet Underground's self-titled third album and the Stones' Exile On Main Street, both of which I deferred to Rob in choosing the representative tracks), resulting in 22 tracks total. The selections are intended as songs we felt appropriate for the mix, rather than our assessments of the "best" tunes on each album.
A couple quick observations. First, as with our respective favorite song collections, Rob's approach is more purist - a favorite album is a favorite album, and if that means you have 3 Beatles albums on this list, then that's the mix you make. In contrast, I tend to prefer a more diverse mix, limiting myself to one album per artist (even if there's no question in my mind that Revolver is a better album than, say, Sonic Youth's Sister). Second, Rob's purism extends to preferring the mono versions of certain 60's classics, observing (correctly) that the mono mix was true to the artist's original intent. Me, I'm a sucker for stereo, even the primitive false-stereo found on some mid-60's work. But, as only Rob's picks were implicated, we went with those mono mixes.
The link on the first song should bring you to a zipped file with the mix + artwork. Naturally, this is done only for the enjoyment of those who already legitimately own the songs; if not, I trust you will preview the songs merely so that you can then run out and buy them.

Feedback:
This was a ton of fun and turned out fantastically, I think. Our tastes are certainly not that far apart, as I love pretty much every record in your top 12. Thanks for doing this, good sir.
I really like your idea, it's brave and cool to see your favs but I can get that static myself, I can't even pick my 10 fav albums, it depens every month
well this has got to be a great listen ! I deliberate too much over my 'meaningless' mixes, however, to have time to do one of these. Good on you both !!
What's not to like??!!
classic stuff :D
I agree with Sport!, great job guys.
Impeccable!
Pretty hard to argue with anything here. Timeless tracks. Great mix, great cover also..
Excellent idea, grand result.
Interesting exercise that makes for a great mix.
You both have impeccable taste.
well if this isn't the ultimate dream collab, i dunno what the hell is - i've been mowing over the idea of a mix with a song from each of my top 20 favorite albums for a while, so this definitely appeals to me - every track is a gem, so picking favorites is fruitless - top job, fellas, my MOTW by far for sure
Now this is a pretty cool mix that Rob Conroy and Pop Kulcher have put together. Good job, you guys! In fact, I'm so impressed with what I see here that I'm going to forgive Rob Conroy for referring to my own mixes as "pathetic concoctions" (and in the comment section of somebody else's mix and not my own, no less). What can I say? I guess I'm the gracious type... :) :) :)
So wait, Kim Gordon and Moe Tucker are the only women on this desert island? I predict webbed feet within three generations. Nice Kinks pick.
Clash, Beatles, Stooges, the Who...fuckin' amazing mix.
So this is what happens when a couple of my favorite music obsessives get together: a far from pathetic concoction of top-notch tunes and artists. Great to see the usual suspects and the lesser known Feelies and Big Star. You sure know how to pick 'em! The only thing missing is a double dose of Marc's artwork -- and a few more female artists ;)
Astral Weeks, Loving Cup, Janie Jones, Pavement, and The VU!? You know, it is considered cheating when you play with the All-Time All-Madden team. Well done!
Got here a bit late on this one. I commend you both on this remarkable feat. Thanks to RC my favourite band appear frequently. But PK has Abbey Road as his favourite Beatles LP and I second that. Not too much to argue with here but I think I'd pick Who's Next over Quadrophenia and ditch Morrison altogether in favour of Love's Forever Changes, my favourite LP. My nitpicking notwithstanding this is sublime.
I'm getting like a freakin parrot 21 from 22 ain't bad at all, guess whom I'd ditch? Great work guys.
Not a bad track on this. Great job you two, you have amazing taste.
Great stuff. (Still, as our fave Swede noted on another mix - all white people. Interesting.)
Gee, I'd like to know how many non-Caucasians are represented in Lally's top 20 ALBUMS (*not* songs) of all-time. Wait, let me bet on this: very few to none.
I've always been the first to admit that my taste in music is hardly racially/ethnically diverse. As one friend described it, I lean towards "jittery white boy music." True enough, I suppose. But when it comes to art, I don't think it's unusual to migrate towards something that speaks to you on a deeper level, so it's not entirely that a white suburban guy is going to find, say, Pavement somehow more personal than Marvin Gaye. Then again, my son listens solely to hip-hop and r&b, so who knows.
Sorry... that should say "it's not entirely surprising" above.
Geez - I said "interesting" - don't get all bent out of shape now.
great effort. cannot wait to crack the seal on this one.
Undeniable!
