Comment:

This mix was inspired by a list I found on the internet entitled
The 100 Greatest Detroit Songs Ever (Metro Times Detroit). They were even good enough to supply a bubbling under list of 93 more songs!
Most of the songs that I selected were in the time range of 1949-1977 (and centered on the early '60s; there was one song from 1927 and one from 1998 with a median value still in the early '60s). I used the songs that dated after 1970 for the first couple and last three songs of the mix. This mix is 71m34s in length.
The picture is of Jackie Wilson who's vocal range was amazing (and I used two of his songs on the mix along with two by Aretha Franklin).

Incredible mix. Been listening to a lot of R&B and soul from the 60's and 70's and this mix has so many favourites I've recently discovered.

Sweet tribute to my old stomping grounds, and where I make pilgrimage several times every year for The Boys Of Comerica Park....Love the Rationals cut. Took me FOREVER to track it down. Now, if I can find The Rockets doing their gut bucket slop rock master cover of the old Fleetwood Mac cut Oh, Well...

Bit late to getting round to this one - the huge amount of links available on AotM at the moment is fantastic, always something new to listen to...
As I'm sure you know I'm a huge soul fan, and Detroit does it best. Loved everything here, in particular Shorty, Jackie(both), LWJ, Geno with an E, and the Jack Scott. Terrific stuff Soul Man...

Thanks for your glowing review Sam...But it is Gino with an I, not an E (the Geno Washington you are thinking of has no link to Detroit, but he is worthy of note; will have to use something by him in the future).

Though you have more black than white music here, Detroit has always fascinated me by the fact that the white music was much harder than the black music, or conversely the black music was much smoother than the white music, in general terms. But, hey, it's a beautiful thing and it definitely resulted in beautiful music, as you have quite effectively documented here...
