My holiday gift to AOTM is disc one of a self-educating project to find a song for each of the 53 (or so) countries in Africa. The song selections reflect my own taste more than anything else, which tends towards funky and homegrown most of the time.Songs are mostly drawn from the wonderful blog bennloxo.com, which has been a guiding light for me, from purchased cds, and from finds at www.calabashmusic.com. The blogs http://likembe.blogspot.com and http://www.voodoofunk.blogspot.com are more recent discoveries - featuring tracks off discontinued records and also homemade tapes, the way music apparently gets distributed most frequently in many parts of Africa. Hopefully all four or five discs will be out by new year (and if you'd like to collaborate, by all means!)

oh my stars! - as Grandma Bea used to say. Mike, this is absolutely amazing and I'd pick it for Mix of the Week in a heartbeat if I hadn't already been "guest editor" twice in the past several months. [please, someone else do it!] the whole thing was a pure delight, w/ my favorites just barely more appealing than the others. my top 9 are from these countries: Malawi, Nigeria, Congo [always love the whistlin' tunes], Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Somalia...and I was certain Mariem Hassan from the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic was going to be my #1 here, until I heard Rene Lacaille of Reunion. I had to look it up; it's just some little island! the French and African influences converge to create one of the most magical sounds ever to slip through my auditory canals. Merry Christmas, Mr. Blasikin. I can hardly wait for disc #2.

My friend AJ tells me that the lead track, Chemirocha, was inspired by the Kipsigis hearing recordings of the yodeling brakeman Jimmy Rodgers, (maybe the first recordings they had ever heard?) and trying to imagine what kind of creature could create music of such unearthly beauty. The resulting tribute is unearthly beautiful in its own right, don't you think?

bloody hell, look what happened when I was in transit (well when my PC was in transit anyway !) . . . . looks excellent and whilst I know very little here, I know more than I do on the average Indie mix !!
