Comment:

Yet another of my ongoing efforts to reformat my mix lists, and in my (not so) humble opinion, I was definitely at the top of my game when I put together Disc #1! The lineup includes a collaboration between Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi and Cult singer Ian Astbury (Ever wonder what a cross between Sabbath and the Cult would sound like? Well, this is the closest we'll ever get!), a dr-op-dead gorgeous ballad from the mighty Van Der Graaf, another epic metal ballad from the mighty Priest, a soundtrack rarity from The Police (Another ballad! Like what gives, eh?), and a very underrated, oft-overlooked metal thrasher from Megadeth.

Not to blow my own horn too loudly, but I have to say that the pairing of the last two numbers on Disc #1 was positively inspired. Granted, pairing those two particular songs from R.E.M. ("A simple prop to occupy my time") and Queen ("The years of care and loyalty / Nothing but a sham, it seems") is admittedly a tad cruel, but it was too good an opportunity to pass up!

Disc #2 is not quite as cohesive as its companion half, but I still think I put together a good o-pening sequence (the first four) and a good closing sequence (the last three). The four-song o-pening sequence is another good example of how lyrical subtext is often conjured up by putting a certain set of songs together. (And in this case, there's a kind of running thread about money and power and idolatry and all that other fun stuff!)
