Comment:

Title from the opening line of the opening song. 2007 was a good year for classic soul music. While putting down some tracks for another mix of 2007 stuff I just had to do a separate soul mix. Some of the greats from the past, some special new talent and of course there is always plenty of soul wannabes doing some credible grooves. So here is some of the best soul of 2007, a few from last year too and the boys from Philly.
The Ryan Shaw, Sharon Jones, Mavis Staples albums are right up there on my best of the year list. The Bettye Levette, Ruthie Foster and The Holmes Brothers are also wonderful albums. The Amy Winehouse is a classic too.

The Joan Osborne was very consistently well done and the Temptations was a nice collection of covers but not essential. Same with the Marc Broussard; interesting covers. JJ Grey was fun and the Leon Russell was a cool comeback. The Joss Stone was inconsistent but with some highlights.

I really liked the selections here from last year and especially played the Cat Powers and Solomon Burke albums a lot this year. Leon Russell on the cover of course.

Very, very, very nice. And I agree; 2007 was good for (the) soul. The one here I haven't heard is Ryan Shaw; based on everything else here, he's a must purchase.

All a board your soul train. This Is Ryan Shaw, 100 Days, 100 Nights, and State Of Grace are among the best release of 2007-any genre.

Outstanding! Who said melodic soul is gone? Hell, it's just been resting, that's all. And a great representation of talent. While I have most of these, I appreciate the link. My only additions would be a cut from Ricky Fante's debut CD "Rewind" and one from The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker CD "Kaboom!" Haven't noticed any of the mixes including cuts from these current soul artists. Let's hope this is a sign of a resurgence in the genre. Oh, and thanks for the photo of Leon, another highly underrated artist who thankfully continues to stop by Boston at least once a year.

A keeper indeed. Yes, that Winehouse CD released this year is a classic. Hope she's still with us at this time next year. Also diggin' the Sharon Jones and that ultra-hip Santa on the cover ;)

Great to see many old school artists are still at it, and that a brood of new performers are keeping soul alive.
