Comment:
Two more cuts from disc/"side" 1: 31) Too Bad About Sorrows [1/22/69; 22.36] and 32) Her Majesty [1/24/69; 24.48] (both performed by the Beatles as a band, the latter of which is Billy Preston's debut on this mix).I've been meaning to put this project together for years and have finally done so in the past week; it's essentially a distillation of a 17-disc set of the vast majority of music that the Beatles recorded from Jan 3-31, 1969 (the set does not include anything from the first day of that month's recording, Jan 2). Although I plan to title this more creatively in the future and plan to write much more extensive liner notes, here's the short explanation:1) I included what I deemed to be the "best" single unreleased version each of these tracks. In a couple of cases (notably "Dig a Pony," "Rip It Up," "Blue Suede Shoes," "Can You Dig It? and "Dig It"--the latter two of which really *are* two different songs"), only seriously edited versions have previously been issued.2) In keeping with my original idea of making this a "real" soundtrack to the Let It Be film, I've included, where possible, the most memorable version of each track featured in the film (none of which were actually featured on the original Let It Be album, incidentally).3) The tracks in quotation marks have never, to my knowledge, been *formally* titled, being either very early Lennon-McCartney compositions whose titles have never been copyrighted and/or formally confirmed by either Beatle or improvisations made up completely on the spot as the tapes rolled. 4) The dates of recording and slate numbers indicating the numerical order of the tracks within a given date are supplied after the track. At any rate, this collection isn't quite as comprehensive as I'd like it to be (it doesn't include George Harrison's acoustic performance of "I Me Mine," for instance, because the camera that recorded it apparently wasn't available to supply the audio for the box set), but it's very, very close. I could've potentially compiled a third disc, but then would have begun including multiple versions of tracks--something that I was determined not to do. At any rate, enjoy.Feedback:
OK. You win, hands-down, for most obsessive mix this month. :)
On the other hand... wow. Wow!
On the other hand... wow. Wow!
Well, I guess we know the MOTW. Unfathomable.
Labour of love, in fact labour of obsessive, stalking, silent phone call love :). I can only collapse in awe at this project, especially as the Beatles are my favourite band but now I have to question my right to call myself a fan. MOTW seems a given.
I just got done reading a new book on the Beatles so this is perfect timing for me. Five stars, Rob.
WOW!
wow indeed.
I agree with every word K&R said. And of course echoing Barry and Sean WOWEE! This is simply incredible, Rob.
Very interesting exercise... and again with the wows!
I'm with Dali, Lally and SammyG...wow. Throw in a "damn" too.
i'm speechless. i have no speech. this is breathlessly amazing. wow. you win, rob. MOTW for sure.
Holy Beatlemania, Con-man! I hope you were able to sleep, eat, and shower while compiling this! ::swagger:: "Throw this on the pile for me" and add five stars!
I'll have to check these guys out!
Cliff is the front runner for funniest comment of '08. Classic!
Outstanding, Sir!!! I concur with the MOTW. I've been obsessing over the multi-track Pepper boots that came out this last week.
Wow! This is quite an undertaking. I admire the love and effort that went into this.
Simply staggering.
Holy Crap, I'm just making a dent in all the discs you gave me over the holidays but I'm gonna need me some of this.
Great mix, mate. The only think missing is the rumoured slap fight between Paul and Yoko in the Abbey Roads parking lot. Looking forward to hearing this!
Outstanding. I have to concede that, while I'm a big fan of the Anthology releases and have various Beatles boots, I haven't really focused much on the Let It Be recordings (though I do have the Glyn Johns mix), largely because, despite a few obvious exceptions, I don't find it among their more compelling batch of tunes. But this looks like the sort of thing that might relieve me of that view...
Wow, is this already off the board? Looks like people are crankin' um out in 08. I am blown away. I always assume I've heard just about every Beatles song, but I'm seeing this is far from the case. Very cool.
Man, this is pretty in-depth. I can't say I can share the same enthusiasm for the Beatles, but I can appreciate this mix and the love and time you put into this.
Wow! Where do you get hold of this stuff. Very impressive. Busy month for the Fab Four.
A guy I know from Beatles boards made a "Thirty Days" distillation like this a few years back. He gave me a copy but I can never convince myself to trudge through the whole thing. I think my favorite track to come out of any of those sessions is the mock German "Get Back," which I first heard on "Artifacts" in the early '90s. The "Drugs, Divorce and a Slipping Image" track is another gem. That stupid "Fly on the Wall" disc should have been more like your comp or my other friend's comp.
Have you heard of "A/B Road"? It's the complete "Get Back" sessions, as assembled by Purplechick. 83 CDs! Insane!
