The International Anthem of Taxistan
Comment:
Genre:A mixed bag of Punk/dance/gypsy/klezmer/DJ/pop/techno/I really have no idea, make up your ownOrigin: Ukraine, across the Balkans, Turkey, Germany, Israel and other parts of the Middle East, the ether, and mostly colliding in New York, New York (hence the title)
If you can sit still while listening to this, please see a physician. :)
A couple of notes:
#1 - I started out with and closed with Gogol Bordello. That is where my interest in a lot of this music was first stirred. And Your Country seemed like a fitting place to start, both as an immigrant's lament and a life without borders anthem.
#5 - As best I can work out this song translates to something like, "I don't come to visit you because I love you, or to eat salad and drink your vodka. I come for the music and when the music starts - DANCES. I dance, dance, dance. Your friends are sick of me. When it's time for bed, I am up on the table dancing. I come for the music... etc." If anyone out there speaks Russian, help me out.
#15 Odd, this is. Kind of an anorak version of Daft Punk, but real train whistle sounds are worth the price of admission.
I guess it is also worth saying that I thought using the word gypsy (instead of Roma) was not politically correct, but it is all over the CDs and websites of the artists here who identify themselves as gypsies, so I have used it, too. No offense intended to anyone.
Feedback:
Is it reasonable to assume that the Golem track is not a Bee Gees cover? My soon to be ex wife speaks Russian as she is Russian....and the sentiments of the song sound very Russian. Oh how I miss those Moscow nights....
єҖסтϊČ Μĩж.
when i come to visit you i will come for the music(and the vodka). when i start dancing on the table feel free to kick me out.
I really like that Leningrad group, they remind me a lot of Fabulosos Cadillacs of Argentina, one of my favorite groups.
