Comment:
A single artist mix I've been wanting to make for years, but kept putting off (in part in the frustrated hope that perhaps, someday, Kevin Shields would produce something new). Finally pulled the trigger.I view My Bloody Valentine in a similar light as Neutral Milk Hotel: a relatively brief existence, just a couple albums (one good, one timeless), a few singles and ep's (a fair number more for MbV than NMH if you count the early efforts), and an almost unrivaled emotional whallop every time I listen. In the case of MbV, I feel a particular bond with their first full-lengther, 1988's Isn't Anything (albeit a weaker album than 1991's breathtaking Loveless: I had just started my first year of law school (with all the fear and disorientation that entails), my long-time college girlfriend was living several thousand miles away (yes, we survived, married 16 years now), and the brutal Chicago winter had just descended. Picked this album up unheard based solely on positive press, and the off-kilter, disorienting sound just perfectly captured my state of mind at the time.
For the mix, I skipped over their early, vinyl-only releases, as they really hadn't found their direction yet. By the time of a pair of late 1987 ep releases, it sounded like they were moving in a jangly, paisley pop direction, pleasant if relatively bland. Just a year later, the next ep (followed by Isn't Anything) announced a major shift, incorporating a UK shoegaze sound that blended Jesus & Mary Chain sonics with the Pixies' twisted pop sense. A few more EP's pushed the bounds ever further, until 1991's climactic Loveless pulled out all the stops, with a sonic barrage that still stands alone. Not something I can listen to all that often, but every time I do it's fresh and energizing. And then they pretty much vanished (save for a stunning contribution to an otherwise forgettable 1996 Wire tribute album). Reemerged on the Lost In Translation soundtrack, and have apparently started doing the reunion tour thing, but still no word on whether anything more will be forthcoming. And maybe it'd be best if they just left the legacy where it stands...
Feedback:
not a group i am familiar with. guess i had better check them out if you are so positive.
kevin shields recently confirmed via a radio show that a forthcoming MBV album is to be released within the year. let's see if there's any truth to that notion. anyhow, i totally agree with you re:loveless - a totally breathtaking album, one of my 40 or so favorites, but something i can only listen to once in a while - kind of preserves its disorienting majesty, i guess. "sometimes" is one of my 25 or so all-time favorite songs, so its absence here really pains me - glad to see "soon" & "when you sleep" here though.
I was listening to "I Only Said" last night while working on a future mix. I happy you let the mix see the light of day.
Fantastic in a word. 'To Here Knows When' still takes my head off and I can't believe you've left it off (sorry!) but so much great stuff all the same. Nice to see all the cool b-sides here too which more than stand up to the album tracks.
Seeing them live you were subjected to cascades of white noise especially during You Made Me Realise which seemed to last half an hour. It was a head-splitting experience but enjoyable. Personally I love their early stuff, I prefer the A New Record 12" to Loveless and I think Isn't Anything is when they got it just right, marrying noise and tune perfectly. Drive It All Over Me is wonderfully dark pop tune that Kylie should cover.
One of my absolute favorite bands, lovingly and capably compiled (see my mix--mix #99019--to see just how similar our picks are; for the second time in 24 hours, I'm nodding my head in agreement way more frequently than I usually am at your selections). Loveless is indeed "breathtaking" and it was hard to cut tracks from it while making a comp.
Nice collection. Loveless is transcedent and was one of those albums I told my kids you've got to hear.
A band that I always liked but one that somehow escaped my collegiate CD buying binges (I finally got around to getting Loveless only last year). Everything I know here is brilliant, and what I don't know is a brutal reminder of dollars wasted on CDs now collecting dust.
One of my all time favorite bands and Loveless has got to be in my top 5 albums. This mix looks wonderful and I cannot imagine how you decided which tracks would not make the final cut. For me it would have to be at least a two disk effort.
I have never taken the time to listen to My Bloody Valentine, probably because I stopped listening to the radio in 1982 and also because I missed the 90s completely in Mexico. So basically, mucho rollo to say I am with Tom.
A-MAZING. MBV is one of those bands that marked the era for me as well. Great choices here. Nice job.
Excellent! Okay, I'm shamelessly bragging, here, but I used to tend bar at a nightclub and Robert Smith came by with his entourage shortly after we closed at three AM. They went into a private VP area and the DJ was looking for stuff to play. While I was cleaning up I ran to the booth and said, "You should play 'My Bloody Valentine!' The DJ said no. Then, literally two seconds later, one of the barbacks came running down the stairs form the VP area and shouted, "He wants to hear 'My Bloody Valentine!'"
