Sikhs In The City(Yeh Bhangra Hop Bakwaas Kya Hai?)
Comment:
This mix celebrates when bhangra briefly went mainstream in 2004 on the back of 'Mundian To Bach Ke's success.Dre and Timbaland were sampling Bollywood while bedroom producers in the U.K were putting live tumbi(thats the riff you can hear on 'Mundian...')and dhol(big bass drum played standing up held up by a neck strap)over U.S hip hop instrumentals and adding Panjabi vocals(see tracks 8,10,15,19,23,24).Bhangra's still huge ofcourse and has a slot now on Radio One but with this mix I just wanted to take it back to when tunes with Hindi hooks and Panjabi vocals were getting daytime radio play.Beats,Bass,Dhols!Balle Balle Bollay!
Feedback:
This looks intriguing, thanks for the dl, time to explore
A few of my punjabis friends really dig this stuff. I've tried, but just can't. I applaud this mix however, as not much hip hop and/or indian music is represented here.
I love this so much, I'm going to marry it. Nothing like good bhangra to brighten an otherwise dreary day!
I am very excited to get schooled here! Thank you!
Cheers everyone!I'll put up part 2 in the next couple of days.
I know a few songs here- Mundian to Bach Ke is killer- just nice to see something a bit different on aotm generally.
this is great
