Comment:

You never know what students will or won't like. Jackie Wilson's unfuckwithable classic gets dissed but they sit rapt watching Sigur Ros' kids flying. The Lips' altrock standard is 'horrible' but Sudanese guys totally dig BSP's tale of immigrants and drinking. Neil Young is boring. Glen Campbell is a hippy. Jens Lekman is sad. Felice Taylor makes us want to dance (can't argue), Kylie is music made by robots (yep) and NSRO are 'beautiful'. But who teaches future continuous, comparatives, infinitive verbs, the compound noun 'photographic memory'?

Love the Beatles -> Glen Campbell run on side One and the Pogues / Lips closing pair on side Two especially.

I can totally identify, I taught ESL in Guadalajara for 6 years, the first two at a high school, where I could get away with nothing with the spoiled kids (it also helped my Spanish). Funny about the Glen Campbell/Neil Young reaction, I actually used Frente!'s cover of Bizarre Love Triangle as well as Everybody Hurts. California Dreamin' is spot on for future tense.

Fuck the kids. I'm the future! Anyway, this is classic, Jake. Love the Fairport Convention, Otis Redding and the Belle and Sebastian songs here. The rest is pretty rad too.

Amo, amas, amat. I hope the parents did not claim you are promoting violence by playing Matty Groves. ;-)

Some kids once attacked me with fruit (seriously).Lemons and limes were hurtling through the air at me from across the road. They were crap shots though and I picked up a lemon and lime and hit one of them on the back of the leg. Great mix, never mind the kids.

Jackie Wilson, Glen Campbell, Sigur Ros, Mamas & the Papas, "Fairytale of New York"... this looks like a greatest hits of the best kind (the kind that aren't hits, I guess). on a recent road trip to the Oregon coast, my boyfriend and I came upon some road construction while listening to that Kylie Minogue song on his i-pod. so the gruff-looking construction worker in orange reflective gear was standing by the road holding a sign with the song's title on it as we passed by... slowly. we thought it was pretty funny. great, great mix.
