76:01 | "Whenever I hear a sound it reminds me of, and suggests, another sound..." -- Brian Eno,Deceleration. This is the most fun I've had making a mix in a long time. Not because other mixes aren't fun...but because I utilized a totally different process for this one. All the tracks here are experimental drones, created from compositions, samples & sections of larger works...via software; scanned into Audacity (freeware)...then worked (and re-worked) until they sounded right for ambient mixing. I spent anywhere from 8 to 12 minutes per track. Effects utilized: echo, bass-boost, sample looping, file elongation, G-verb/threshold leveling, and reverse-reverb (all pull-down menu options) to one degree or another. The play-list became an internal code, assigned to each track, based upon the artist and number of times the file underwent digital interpolation. It did get a bit bloody, and there were a LOT of deletions along the way, but alls well, (hopefully) in the end. Zip file d/l contains the usual tracks & artwork + a list of the original artists used.
Perfect for the rugged, out-of-doors white-noise enthusiast! (best via headphones).

Obviously, to say this is TOTALLY original would be too obvious, but still quite true. Mixes like these take us to whole new realm. Your efforts are applauded. I am extremely excited to dawn my cans and give this a spin.By the way, is that a fuzzed out background of Larry King's show? Shivers....
i am more impressed with the process than the results but that is just my tastes. i applaud your efforts. i wish i could figure audacity out.

Looks I'm going to have to delve into Audacity a bit more. To date I've just been using it for vinyl rips.

While I've never downloaded one of my own mixes (why bother?), I did today to see how this played
in mp3 format. That's how I uploaded it since the original mix is almost 600 MG
zipped. Track 5 was giving me problems so I've re-zipped the mix using the .wma
format (which plays O.K. on my desktop). If anyone else has a problem with "skippng mp3s", feel
free to re-download the new format, above, or

Wow Gene. I have tried something very similiar to this with Audacity as recently as two weeks ago, although my mission was to make short interludes to tie together an ambient style mix rather than make a whole piece. Having discovered how time consuming the process can be (even to get a short snippet) I must applaud you for this and MUST hear it, I might even pick up some tips.

in general, tracks with vocals are the most difficult because of what happens to the human voice during
deceleration (they all end up sounding like something from "The Exorcist"). That said, track 4 (Fripp & Eno)
does contain some hushed vocals...but hushed enough that they're barely noticeable, post deconstruction.
To any who have listened, don't hesitate, if you're of a mind, to be critical (+ or -). While there's no
overall accounting for taste, let me know what "worked" & didn't work for you. I may plan one more of this type, then, perhaps, a mix that blends Audacity creations to regular, untouched ambient compositions.

I've done some fooling around with Audacity, but not quite this experimental. Anyway, nice single artist mix.
There's not much one can say about this pre-listen, is there? The description certainly looks very very intriguing, and I look forward to giving this a listen.
Always good to see an AOTMer posting a mix of their own creation. Will put this on my download queue. Not sure if it will be better than the 57 minutes of REO Speedwagon covers I recorded on my kazoo. It certainly "worked" for me!

and the MP3 encoder for it. If you get something original, meaning that you can release without
worrying about copyrights, let me know, AtmoWorks can put it out for you. Also, any artist recommendations from you will be highly considered. We're looking for new artists.

can get palatable sounds from the software. #2, in the (slow) planning stage will hopefully kick
it up a notch, f-l-o-w & content wise. #3 will, at this point (longer range), be an attempt to set my "creations"
alongside ambient notables like yourself, maybe Robert Rich, Jesse (Numina) or Steve Roach...just to see what's possible.
At some point I'd like to be able to purchase the right synths, pads & software packages and take a stab @ new sounds totally
from scratch. But, as you now know firsthand, raising a family takes first priority...so that final stage is still penciled
in for "some day"...in the future.
But how 'bout something for my kazoo toting bud, Moe? Ha! Ambient Kazoo...the water's are completely unchartered!!

Listened to this over the weekend, and wow, this was very very nicely crafted.

Thanks for sharing this... I've downloaded it and hope to listen soon. I'm obsessed with audacity but haven't attempted anything remotely this interesting with it.
This is great stuff, Gene, some audacious Audacity work here. Particularly like Fe5_X and (obviously ;)) AN_X. Nice little breathy bits on the former (from doing similar things, it sounds like slowed sax/trumpet work, with the click of the valves in there too...but then again it could be anything).

I am speechless about the mix, but very interested in Audacity. Thanks for the advice. I downloaded the beta version a few weeks ago, but wasn't too happy with it. I'll try the regular version.
