Comment:

The first record I bought with my own money was the Island Records compilation "Bumpers" .Ever since, the label has occupied a very special place in my affections.

The last coupla months I've been doing a lot of digging round the company's golden period: the era of the legendary "Pink Label" releases.

This was when Island forged it's identity as the definitive British indie, fit to be ranked along side Atlantic, Elektra, Blue Note, Stax & the other mavericks for whom artistic considerations took priority over balance sheets (at least in the beginning).

The surest indicator of its success back then was the speed with which the old skool industry biggies introduced their Island clones: Decca with Nova & Deram, Pye with Dawn, Philips with Vertigo & EMI with Harvest (watch this space) but though they all released many fine records, none were able to capture and reproduce the unique aura that clings to releases bearing the ILPS serial number prefix even now.

Although Chris Blackwell has turned out to be the label's public face, (and why not, it was his financial bollocks on the line), Guy Stevens, Joe Boyd with his Witchseason stable & Terry Ellis & Chris Wright's Chrysalis all made invaluable contributions in creating the Island mystique.

They all feature in one way or another here together with selections from some of the odder releases like the dabblings with free jazz (SME) & even easy listening (Bama Winds) -both of which were buggers to track down but well worth it- and a couple of one-off singles.

More volumes are in the pipeline. Be prepared...

This is really great. It was a heck of a run there, diggin' the Crimson, Mott, Traffic, Martin, Drake and Spooky Tooth and anxious to explore the balance.

Cool! Lookin forward to this. It's weird how some obviously killer mixes on here get almost totally overlooked.

You hit the nail on the head here. Anything with Mott sucks me right in.
