Comment:
Chicago-based singer-songwriter Kevin Tihista (typically recording as Kevin Tihista's Red Terror) is one of my favorite overlooked artists of the past few years. The breathy vocals and pervasive melancholy mood draw the inevitable Elliott Smith comparisons, though he's also got a retro-70's vibe behind some of the songs that puts him in Epic Soundtracks territory as well. He tends to blend stripped-down acoustic-based indie-folk-rock with more glossy Burt Bacharach/Brian Wilson-infused baroque pop, though even the poppier tracks barely mask the bitterness of much of the lyrical content. Three proper albums to date, plus a demo/outtake collection, and supposedly a new album due out soon. I can't say I love the covers -- the slavishly loyal Kinks cover ("Situation Vacant") is just too far removed from the mood of his own songs not to be jarring (something like "A Long Way From Home" is much more his speed), and the Dave Mason cover ("We Just Disagree"), while tasteful, brings back too many memories of crappy 70's radio -- but they do introduce a slightly lighter air to the whole thing. Check him out.Feedback:
when you say check it out, i check it out. thanks!
Uh-oh, sounds like another one right up my alley that I have to search out...
have to admit i've never even heard of him, marc, but your description has basically sold me into checking him out - thanks a bunch
Such a great title, and a great idea for a single artist mix. I swear Wake Up Captain is the disc I've burned for the most people, It's my mission to get that record heard and I'm gonna listen right now. Bravo man...
I can't wait to check him out! I love Elliott Smith's voice and being Chicago-based clinched it. Thanks!
I never really thought of Elliott Smith, but then nothing ever actually reminds me of Elliott, even though his name comes up in connection with every sad guy with a guitar. Tihista seems a little more chamber pop to me, though.Anyway, great compilation! I'm glad to have him as a part of my collection, especially because of a number of these songs. I've only listened to Wake Up, Captain a couple times, but I think I liked it the best of all.Oh, and although your title track is my favorite song of his, I definitely would have named this "Rhymes With Fiesta."
Well you've got me... never heard of him either, but sounds like something I need to hear!
Heard of him but never heard his music. Maybe now is the time.
I'll have to investigate....
I have the Don't Breathe A Word CD from 2001 that a friend brought to my attention but haven't heard anything else. This looks like a fine collection.
