Comment:

A lot of labels have MP3's of some/all/most of their artists on their website. It's a great way to hear a lot of new music (and some comedy). To show how much of it is new to me, I put a * for artists I haven't heard before. My first series is for the well-known label Sub Pop. There website has info about all the bands they have ever represented, but don't have mp3's for all of them. I made sure that I put one song for each artist they had available. There are two more volumes I will be posting soon. Here is a little Sub Pop info from Wiki: Sub Pop is a record label in Seattle, Washington that achieved fame in the late 1980s for first signing Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney and many other bands from the local Seattle music scene. They are often credited with taking the first steps towards popularizing grunge music, and have continued to achieve critical and commercial success in the new millennium, with popular indie bands such as The Postal Service and The Shins on their roster. Though often called an independent music label, Sub Pop is 49% owned by Warner Music Group, one of the largest major record labels in the world. They own a 5% stake in the Alternative Distribution Alliance, with Warner Music Group owning the other 95%.

Warner Group - there goes their indie cred. Nice idea for mix though.

sub pop...i don't know about indie cred, but they have a lot of good bands on their label. i mean, for me, since they have flight of the conchords, they win...some others are iron and wine, low, the go!team, etc...but those are prolly gonna be on your other mixes, so i'll shut up now.

yes, they will be on the other mixes except for the go! team. No mp3's on their site. Great band though.

Indie cred is a meaningless term to me, as well. If it sounds good, I'll listen whether it's Jay-Z, Bob Dylan or one of the above bands. Speaking of which, outside of Band of Horses and Damien Jurado I'm in the dark. Glad to have a chance to check them out, though.

Honestly, I have always been biased against indie music because most of it sounded like the artists didn't explore their roots any deeper than "maybe" the Velvets or Stooges. I am more interested in a group that prove they know who Bix Beiderbecke or Billie Holiday represent, the pantheon, you know? I am a little more open-minded now, but it does give me special joy to hear Jack White cover Robert Johnson, for example.
