Comment:
That's right, I'm baaaaaaack!! Come on, admit it. You missed me! ;-)Well...okay, maybe not. But here I am once more, regardless. And I offer up my latest slice of Pazuzu Pizza Pie! You should know the drill by now: More of the same, only...different! :-) No major altering of the formula this time around, that's for sure. If any significant lineup changes occur, they'll happen only gradually, by degrees. (For example, notice how I've only recently started including material by Bob Dylan, while the frequency of appearances by Peter Hammill and Van Der Graaf Generator has tapered off somewhat.) Like I stated before elsewhere, there's no point in tampering with this particular pizza recipe and messing with the flavor!
This time around, we've got quite a handful of cover tunes: Lou Reed does a cover of Doc Pomus (taken from the soundtrack to David Lynch's 1997 film "Lost Highway"), Patti Smith does a cover of a Tears For Fears hit, and nu-metal monsters Disturbed cover Genesis. Elsewhere, we get an early '70s rarity from Mott The Hoople (from the '98 box set), a lesser-known '67 pop-rocker from the Stones, a menacing solo turn from Alice In Chains axeslinger Jerry Cantrell, a humorous '98 outtake from Mudhoney, a witty two-minute (non-)war epic from the Monkees, a latter-day epic from '70s prog titans Yes, and we close out with a heartfelt prayer from the late Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy!
By the way, I always thought it would be a total laugh-riot if someone were to make a video for Iggy Pop's "Nightclubbing" using footage from "March Of The Penguins"! Yeah, I guess that's how my brain's wired, that I would find something like that to be funny...
I know that it's probably considered rather tacky to fish, but I'm rather eager to know what people think of that end sequence for Disc #1!
(I would also like to throw myself on the mercy of the court for accidentally violating one of my own rules! Namely, I've got a song from Yes and a song from Asia on Disc #2. This means we've got an overlap of one musician on Disc #2 - namely guitarist Steve Howe! I just may have to commit a "counter-violation" on Disc #1 of a future mix in order to compensate for that! :-()
Captain Hi-Top, where are you? Did you get your package yet? And if so, what do you think? Be sure to let me know at your earliest convenience! :-)
Feedback:
Very well put together. Sometimes I think we tend to overlook some of the more well-known artists in favor of indie musicians and bands (not that there's anything wrong with that). I do miss Phil Lynott. He was quite a character.
Darth, I'd listen to disc one. More than once. Man, it's been a long time since I've heard that Queen track....
I've got a weak spot for ballroom blitz.
first of all, fishing isn't tacky. why, when I was a boy my father used to take me up to Rimrock Lake... oh, never mind. love several of these songs, especially Asia and R.E.M. picks. and I must say that your notes are simply the best, Darth Pazuzu!
tornadoZ, I laughed at your comment which I suspect means my sense of humour needs surgery. Hmm, I wonder where you had gone. Anyway my picks are the Beatles, Iggy Pop, Sweet and Rolling Stones. I would say REM but buskers have ruined that song for me.
Thumbs up on the Sweet, Stones, Dylan, Stooges, and Trail of Dead for starters, but not sure I can abide that "Land of Confusion" cover.
I'm with Gabe and Funky on this one.
