Comment:
What better way to honor a lover's holiday with an infamous massacre in its history than with some musical tales of vengeful lovers, cuckold husbands, and crimes of passion? These, more specifically, are songs of the country, folk, and blues persuasions that depict men who murder their wife/lover/object of affection; or at the very least, explicitly threaten to do so. A startlingly common theme...Several of these songs have their origins in much older English and Irish murder ballads. "Knoxville Girl" is one of several Americanized adaptations (i.e. "Waco Girl") derived from the English ballad "Oxford Girl." "Pretty Polly" is an updated version of a 1700's English ballad called "The Gosport Tragedy." "Little Mathie Grove" is a slight lyrical variation on "Matty Groves." "Little Sadie" has its origins in the early 20th century, and has spawned several more recent, updated versions under various titles, including "Cocaine Blues." "Never Let the Devil Get the Upper Hand of You" was, to my knowledge, originally performed by the Carter Family. I might also add that this mix does not encourage, or in any way endorse, the threatening, stabbing, drowning, clubbing, or otherwise harming of one's wife, lover, or girlfriend. Unless she deserves it.XOXOFeedback:
Delightfully spiteful.
timing is everything.
Nice one. Always loved murder ballads of all sorts.
Nice. This beats the Nick Cave album. ;-)
Excellent collection, and it's pure genius to post it on Valentine's Day.
This is a mix right down my dark alley. A little surprised you don't have any "Shoeshine" Johnny Shines on here though. That guy was dark!
Lover-ly. Darkly delicious.
This mix makes me want to re-up on Strychnine and fake some fingerprints!
Excellent theme and execution.
Hemizen said "execution"...get it??!??
Thanks for the XOXO, I'll be giving this a listen shortly. Nowt better than a bit of wife clubbing to start the day...
Happy Valentine's Day.
very clever idea - love lots of these tracks...
Perfectly fits my melancholy mood, after watching "The Assassination of Jesse James". Wonderful spooky mix.
Congrats. Great Idea...wonderfully conceived and executed.
When I get up off the ground from hysterical laughter, I'll download this well-deserved MOTW.
That Skip James song is quite an opener. Love this mix.
Congrats! Stellar mix and perfect timing.
Wonderful. One of the best V-day mixes I've ever seen.
Oo er - violence at valentine's. Me likey.
A mix of the hurting kind.
awesome mix! As me and my dad would say !very coolisimo!
Well my late gran came from Gosport and my dad bequeathed me his Jansch lp with a version of Pretty Polly on it. So. An amazing mix.
keen choice for MOTW, rob - congrats!
MotW huh? Bah humbug MotY so far I say, so so good mate...
funny and cool. Congratulations
Just burying the wife in the garden and this is a fine melange to accompany said travail!
Brilliant -- sounds pretty great.
Gobi said all the words i was going to say. Except jhougalagugi.
Killer!
played this thing at work today, favorites are the 2/3 pair, the entire 9->13 stretch, but best of all is the trio of "Pretty Polly," "Little Mathie Grove" and "Delilah." my colleague said he didn't like the Roy Buchanan track, but then I hit him with my stapler, cut off his head and buried him under his desk. great pick for mix of the week, congratulations!
Man this is totally killer! Much deserved MOTW!
Brilliant.
Congrats FR, you certainly deserve MotW for this brilliant concoction.
I like this,awesome!
I almost cried when I found out you got MOTW. Well, not really, but I was particularly proud. Especially glad that Junior wasn't going to get that spanking if he beat out the old man! What a fantastic concept and I love that we were on the same wavelength with the mix I was alt-djing at the same time.I am more than ready for GB7!!!!
