No, not a mix about mosquitos. Morrissey! And The Smiths of course, the finest band ever to hail from my gloomy hometown city..Every track here is in some way connected to Morrissey. Firstly, his love of sixties girl groups and singers is well documented. During their first gig, at The Ritz, Manchester in October 1982 they finished their set with a cover of The Cookies `I Want A Boy For My Birthday'. They covered the Cilla track `Work Is A Four Letter Word' late on in their brief career. The Smiths also covered Twinkle's `Golden Lights', widely regarded as their weakest track - find the original here
Included are some of Morrissey's favourite acts - Sparks, Raymonde and Ludus to name but 3. As a solo artist he covered 8,10,24 and 28 amongst others.
Don't plagiarise or take "on loan"> Well, actually, that has been a common occurance in the Career of Moz. His track `Certain People I Know' bears more than a passing resemblance to the T'Rex opener. The Smiths `A Rush And A Push' a mirror image of `Shoes' by Reparata ( thanks Moe for that one).
Lyrically `Last Night I Dreamt' is influenced by the Billy Fury track featured here ( Morrissey based his early image on the `50s icon ). `There is A Light' owes a debt, lyrically, to the New York Dolls `Lonely Planet Boy'. The Dolls connections don't stop there of course - their track Trash a live Morrissey favourite. He was also the President of the NYD Fanclub many moons ago..
The Bacarach penned `The Answer To Everything' featured here handed Johnny Marr the melancholic tone on `Please Please Please'. Then there's Victoria Wood - Northern Comedienne who makes her AotM debut here - `Fourteen Again' a huge influence, lyrically, on `Rusholme Ruffians', musically, the Elvis track 'His Latest Flame' most definitely the blueprint.
Add to all this, Momus, whose character `Maf' plans to kill Morrissey, but is thwarted by Didsbury Police, the `How Soon Is Now' sampling Soho track, some nice Smiths covers (25-27), and Gene. Upon releasing their debut single in 1994, they were heralded as the NEW Smiths. They weren't. But the track featured here was one of their best..
So, there you go, a mix that should delight Morrissey, fans of, and hopefully one that stands alone as a fine mix for non believers. Why don't you find out for yourselves.

Don't think we have ever discussed this but I can't stand him. 1 or 2 songs max for me I'm firmly on the Johnny Marr end of things. The greatest guitarist of his generation. That said... this looks like mix-making genius to me. Climbing all over it now!
No Stop Killing Me, he used to wear a t-shirt sporting those very words. The girl from the Siddeleys was sometimes referred to as a female Morrissey. And the line from the Tillotson song Send Me The Pillow You Dream on used in Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others. Credit Kathryn with these observations, nitpicking notwithstanding this a mighty fine mix.

This looks great - considerably more fun than listening to the man himself! Like Barrydali, The Smiths and Morrissey have been mostly a closed book -despite my wife's attempts to convert me.

Not a huge fan (Moz's simply too depressing), but I like "How Soon is Now?" Bowie does a great cover of
"I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday" on his Black Tie, White Noice album, which I heard him describe in an interview as
"me doing Morrisey doing me".

Was a time I couldn't stand the miserable twat but as I get older I'm mellowing and have crossed him off my hit list (just Dylan and Radiohead on it now and I'll NEVER change my stance there)So I'll readily give this mix a chance.
I recently read an article that had a long explanation of why Mexican-Americans like Morrissey so much. He just has the magic. Love the research here, Sam.

I guess I'm with those that sees this as a fine mix on it's own merits. Was never a big (or little) Smiths/Morrissey fan. Very small doses only... but I could spend some time with this mix.
This looks great! I've been getting into Morrissey and The Smiths for a while, and I'll bet this'll help me grasp where Moz was coming from.

sammy, this is indescribably close-to-home for me. the smiths are my second all-time favorite band, & moz & marr are both my favorite lyricist & guitarist of all time - respectively. this is just dripping with gems from all corners. today is actually my birthday, believe it or not, & i've been trying my best to track down that cookies song for a little mini-top 5 birthday songs-playlist i made for myself (afraid my original copy went up in smoke with the rest of my MP3s on my old harddrive). would you be interested in a trade for this? i'm foaming at the mouth at the mere sight of it...please?
This is absolutely fantastic, Sam. Really. Between you and Barry, I don't see how there could be better mixes cropping up on AotM right now. I love the Smiths and this mix, both completely wholeheartedly. I'm especially fond of the Suede Patti Smith and T. Rex songs here.
I am currently downloading and I am excited to hear this. The Smiths were definately a part of my high school life. I have had a love hate relationship with Morrissey for a long time. I feel the same way about David Byrne for some reason. Oh well... I'm impressed with the research on this. Thanks.

I'm not a great Morrissey fan (there are a few tracks I love, but, well, you know . . . . ), however, I do appreciate the influences . . . and this is a whole lot better than his greatest hits album I heard recently with his dreadful version of Redondo beach included . . . I love mixes where I have to work at understanding the connections . . . good job . . .
Some mixes are bigger than others, and this is one of your bigger ones. Even without the Morrissey/Smiths connection, this would still be one helluva mix. But the theme, along with the research, cover and thoughful liner notes, take it up a notch. Looking forward to Art of the Marr (SOHO's "Hippy Chick" for starters?) Please, please, please let me get what I want... and send me a copy when you get a chance ;)

when I was a teen and heavily into synth-y new wave (like Heaven 17, Human League, Dead or Alive, etc.) I read about The Smiths in Star Hits magazine. When I went to Seattle, I picked up the 7" of "How Soon Is Now" so I could check them out... and I was pretty disappointed. Guitars!? it didn't take me long to figure out what was going on though and learn to love The Smiths. "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" is still one of my all-time favorites. anyway, I hope that the AotM folks who don't like Morrissey or The Smiths will give this mix a listen. It's incredibly good and offers a variety of sounds and songs that aren't really very directly Smiths-like to the ear. my personal favorites are Momus, Diana Dors, Shakespeare's Sister (I thought I didn't like them!), Raymonde and the Dream Academy (one of my forgotten favorites!), Billy Bragg, Audrey Hepburn trio there at the end. Best of all though is that delightfully strange Reparta track, "Shoes." great stuff, Sammyg.
