Comment:
For more extensive liner notes, please see discs 1 and 2, which were posted just previously.Dedications:This "box set," of sorts, goes out to Mr. z2 for the immediate inspiration, to lo-fi jr (who, to me, is Mr. Birthday Party around these parts) and to p the swede [without whom the tracks from Tender Prey, Let Love In, Murder Ballads or The Boatman's Call (although I've owned all of them at one time or another) would not be here]. Last but certainly not least, I'd like to give a shout of thanks out to SwankQueen for introducing me to Barry Adamson's solo work, particularly to the phenomenal song included here; without her, I would not have even known that it existed.Tons of songs had to be cut here (almost a whole disc's worth) and they are, in chronological order: "Dead Joe," "6" Gold Blade" and "Hamlet (Pow, Pow, Pow)" by the Birthday Party, plus "Say Goodbye to the Little Girltree,""Sad Waters," "Blind Lemon Jefferson" (whose title to me is much greater than the song), "The Six Strings That Drew Blood" (ditto "Blind Lemon"), "Long Black Veil," "Jack's Shadow," "Sad Waters," "Jack the Ripper" (acoustic version), "Loverman," "King Kong Kitchee Kitchee Ki-Mi-O," "Knoxville Girl," "Time Jesum Transeuntum Et Non Riverentum" (the absolute LAST TRACK CUT), "People Ain't No Good," "Come Into My Sleep" (thanks to sport! for calling that track to my attention), "As I Sat Sadly by Her Side," "Cannibal's Hymn," "Hiding All Away," "Breathless," "O Children," "(I Don't Need You To) Set Me Free" (Grinderman), "Man in the Moon" (ditto), "Today's Lesson," "Albert Goes West" and "Hold On to Yourself" by Nick & the Bad Seeds, and "Cindy," Johnny Cash's late-in-life duet with Nick.Feedback:
wicked. scum is my favorite nick cave song.
Fantastic collection, and love the notes. Always liked "Time Jesum..." - glad to hear it was so agonizingly cut.
Yeah, more more more.
Love everything I know here but the duet with Shane (which I really, really wanted to like.) Again, great work on this project.
Wow, that's thorough. I don't listen to the man nearly as much as I probably should, so I'm not quite qualified to comment, but I have no doubt that this is an excellent compendium.
Whoa, dude...jaw-droppingly great collection from an artist that I continue to appreciate more and more as time goes on. I'm with ya on "Nocturama" being an underrated gem, though I do still enjoy listening to "Murder Ballads" from time to time. Outstanding effort, my friend. So good.
I'll gladly wear that title, Rob. I'd argue that my favorite part of the Birthday Party was actually Roland S. Howard's guitar, but your dead on in your assessment of wicked Nick. After some lackluster & just plain lazy discs he's absolutely turning out his best stuff right now.
Impressive feat. Love Nick Cave, and never seem to have enough...these would do nicely.
I swore I typed this today but here goes again... Nick Cave as always hit me like a hammer since I first heard Tender Prey. An absolutely essential collection Mr C.
Another artist I have criminally neglected. I'll rectify that, thanks to this.
this is of course great stuff
Never really got into Cave *that* much but he's made some great songs. 'Into my Arms' is amazing.
As I was saying...
