Comment:

A specially-comissioned project for the lovely and talented talia j, one of my earliest supporters and, in some ways, one of my closest friends here at my AotM Home Away from Home. Her request (she called it a "proposition"): "an educational mix--in this case, artists you suspect I'm not listening to/familiar with and should be, using tracks off whichever albums of theirs you think I should start with." After reviewing every one of her mixes from 2001-present and thinking back on what mixes she'd already received from me, I set to work. Although I definitely took what I've always had as a gut perception of her taste into account in my choices, I also wanted to include acts that have fundamentally changed my view of music in the five or so years since we last traded (Venetian Snares, Boris, MF DOOM/Madvillain), acts that I knew (and at least liked) at the time but who have really grown to shape my current musical taste (Albert Ayler, Serge Gainsbourg, Scott Walker, Can, Howlin' Wolf, John Martyn), old favorites that I've been listening to with greater appreciation these days (Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine, The Fall, Pere Ubu, Mission of Burma, Robert Wyatt, T. Rex, Jimmy Reed). This, obviously, is the result. I did veer from her instructions a bit with Scott Walker (the track hails from Scott 2 and it's Scott 4 that I'd first recommend, but I thought she'd love that particular song so much that I couldn't resist using it) and Grant Hart (since I used the single version of the song that eventually appeared on his to-die-for classic debut LP, Intolerance, which is obviously what I'm recommending). I suspect there will be a third disc shaped in the next few days, if not a fourth. Thanks again to SwankQueen for hipping me to Aceyalone (and that song/album, in particular--it's now one of my all-time favorite hip-hop records.) Title by the ever-iconoclasic Mark E. Smith.

I'd really enjoy this . . . my wife on the other hand absolutely will not be in the room when I listen to Trout Mask Replica or Karen Dalton . . . each to their own !

what a wonderful gesture, rob, this is just dripping with inspiration - can't hurt to have a batch of ace tunes like this either, lovin' the madvillain, t. rex, MBV (that's actually my favorite MBV track & one of my top 25 favorite songs of all time), daniel johnston, bowie, nina nastasia, serge & brigitte, gang of four & fall tracks the mostest - i've actually been looking for a proper introduction to the fall's work, as my knowledge of them is limited (hint, hint)

This is a great mix. Excellent diversity and a lot of gems. I just used that Raincoats track on my radio show. Now, to look up the tracks I'm not familiar with...

Absolutely brilliant, Rob. I love just about everything I know here, but "Sea Song", "2541", "Jackie" and "Naki Kyoku" are among my all-time favourites, in particular. And what a great title, to boot!

This looks great -- which is a hilarious thing to say when I've only ever heard one of the tracks and maybe a scant handful of the artists, but it's true. And I don't think you could have picked a more apt title, either. Here's hoping you enjoy my return projects (the main one is up to two discs, and there's an alternative collection taking form, too) as much.

Well she certainly propositioned the right guy, as you've provided your student with quite a musical education. I'll bet you enjoyed putting this together, and I'm sure Talia will be thrilled to bits. BTW, there's a nice little write-up on Hart's Intolerance in the latest MOJO mag.

How considerate and what dedication. And what a fine selection it is, especially good to see some Shack and a mighty good decision to pick that Scott Walker song.

This is a wonderful mix, goes without saying. You've steered Talia in the direction of some fine, fine albums also. Rock Bottom, Loveless, Scott 2, Solid Air, The Modern Dance, Low.. This list goes on......

This looks like a very good mix. I know some sparse tracks and I'm very intrigued to see how they are connected. Any chance of you uploading this? I'm also quite glad you consider Venetian Snares and Madvillain as acts that've changed your view on music.. I've been following the first from his early weird phase to this "orchestral" he's going through now- this billie tune is great, isn't it? And for some reason madvillain has been part of my daily soundtrack for weeks now. But the rest as well, the Daniel Johnston and Robert Wyatt tunes are favourites of mine and I like your Bowie pick. Great mix!

So much to love here, especially the blues guys (Dr. John included) plus Bowie, Sly & Serge of course. Not a big fan of Scott Walker, but that doesn't matter here.

I am not familiar with everything here, but what I know (e.g. Sly, MBV, MoB, Shack (especially cool)), is quite good. Nice mix.
