Comment:
A specially-comissioned project for the lovely and talented talia j, one of my earliest supporters and, in some ways, one of my closest friends here at my AotM Home Away from Home. Her request (she called it a "proposition"): "an educational mix--in this case, artists you suspect I'm not listening to/familiar with and should be, using tracks off whichever albums of theirs you think I should start with." After reviewing every one of her mixes from 2001-present and thinking back on what mixes she'd already received from me, I set to work. Although I definitely took what I've always had as a gut perception of her taste into account in my choices, I also wanted to include acts that have fundamentally changed my view of music in the five or so years since we last traded (Venetian Snares, Boris, MF DOOM/Madvillain), acts that I knew (and at least liked) at the time but who have really grown to shape my current musical taste (Albert Ayler, Serge Gainsbourg, Scott Walker, Can, Howlin' Wolf, John Martyn), old favorites that I've been listening to with greater appreciation these days (Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine, The Fall, Pere Ubu, Mission of Burma, Robert Wyatt, T. Rex, Jimmy Reed). This, obviously, is the result. I did veer from her instructions a bit with Scott Walker (the track hails from Scott 2 and it's Scott 4 that I'd first recommend, but I thought she'd love that particular song so much that I couldn't resist using it) and Grant Hart (since I used the single version of the song that eventually appeared on his to-die-for classic debut LP, Intolerance, which is obviously what I'm recommending). I suspect there will be a third disc shaped in the next few days, if not a fourth. Thanks again to SwankQueen for hipping me to Aceyalone (and that song/album, in particular--it's now one of my all-time favorite hip-hop records.) Title by the ever-iconoclasic Mark E. Smith.Feedback:
Great stuff, as always
