When terms like “British rock royalty” get tossed around, there are only a few names that truly fit the bill. Deep Purple is surely one of those names. Heavy metal as we know it would have sounded very different — if it would even have existed at all — without the crushing riff machine of Purple clearing the path. Classic-rock radio stations everywhere would’ve had to seriously slim down their playlists, too, if standards like “Smoke On the Water,” “Space Truckin’,” and “Highway Star” were never recorded. Fortunately for us all, Deep Purple did, indeed, blaze bright and bold, shining on through the decades, even as band members came and went. We’ve taken the true classics from every awe-inspiring era of Purple’s proud history and put them all together in one undeniable eruption of head-turning heaviness right here.
