Comment:

Well, I don't really hate rap, as the title might suggest (those guys don't really either), but as my daughter reminded me, I don't know much about rap. Her overall critique is that this is mostly "so last century" and even called Sabotage "country-rock" which is why I love her so. But the inspiration for the mix was to return the favor that Mr. Lombardi did for me with his country mix from a couple weeks back. Also, I felt like I owed it to him since his own rap mix was probably the only collection in his ouvre that I didn't absolutely love.Regarding the tunes, Eminem and Molotov bring out the same reaction in me, I enjoy a few of their songs, but they are mostly clowns to me. The Outkast guys are fun, but they always look like each wishes they were the opposite height. Illya Kuryaki are fun with their kitsch kung-fu videos, and like an Argentine version of Outkast. Of course, the Sabina, Lupita and Waits are just dabbling in the genre. Chuck (and the Bob original) I consider proto-rap. Bob always talked about hearing the original 'rappers' on the streets of NY in the early 60s. Control Machete, Arrested Development, Us3, I don't dig that deeply into, but I usually enjoy their work. If Kanye weren't such a prick and Beck wasn't a Scientologist, I could take them a little more seriously. And I do like the Beastie Boys pero ya dejan de mamar con el buddhismo and of course I just have two words for Chuck D: íííFLAVOR FLAV!!!.

Speaking of Molotov ... I can't remember the name of the song right off the top of my head, but it's the whistley one with the video. I had that song stuck in my head for a month after I first heard it.

I take rap per song and not a whole I like but in general Public Enemy is consistantly good.

Well a lot of what is posted on here is last century. Anyway the best rap is last century, like the best punk. Oh what do I know, I only like about 3 rap songs.

Rap certainly has a polarizing effect. Every once in a while I hear something I like, but then I don't listen to the genre enough to find that much. Nice effort, however.

Like pretty much everyone else here, I'm not a rap afficionado, but rather evaluate each song on an individual basis. That said, there's stuff on here that I truly enjoy, and lots of other stuff I haven't even heard. I really like your scope, great idea including Berry and Waits.

wow, i'm honored, derek - truly touched to have sparked the effort in this. alot of excellent tracks here - 1, 3, 8, 13, 15, 16 & 20 popping out the most to me. i agree whole-heartedly on the eminem issue - it actually really pisses me off that he records so much garbage, because he is a supremely talented MC & has the potential to be one of the greats, but too often gets bogged down in his angry-white-boy gimmick that ultimately makes his music feel forced & hammy. that song is a classic though, on any level.

Wow...had totally forgotten about that Digable Planets track. And I second K&R's sentiments re:rap & punk. Nice one, Derek...

I like some of this, not all. 15-16 of course, and Jesus Walks is pretty cool. I like that Estelle track, which is currently the No1 single in the U.K. I met her about four years ago, WHAT a DIVA! That was when no-one knew who she was, so I dread to think how vile she is nowadays..

digable planets are definitely where it's at. if you want to know where hip-hop went, you should know early 90s. who cares if it's last century? native tongues, zulu nation, a tribe called quest, digable planets of course... but basically you can follow your ears: if they used jazz samples, they knew what they were doing and they're worth your time (as someone who generally doesn't dig rap).

I love the PE and Beasties tracks, like the Digable Planets, OutKast, Beck and Arrested Development tracks, and am indifferent-to-hostile to most of the rest here (with the exceptions of your opener and closer that aren't, well, rap, although I know what you were getting at). I say this, btw, *not* hating rap at all.

Oops, I meant to qualify my "indifferent-to-hostile" comment to exclude the Spanish rap, since I've never heard any of it. Sorry about that....
