Comment:
Well, this particular mix turned out to be rather...well, workmanlike. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it just kind of seems like business as usual, even by my (often) predict-able standards. There's no real zap! of inspiration like there was for me last time. Yeah, there are a couple of really good sequences and juxtapositions. I think the pairing of the live Maggie's Farm (yeah, that's right - the one from Newport in '65!) with Rock The Casbah turned out pretty cool, and putting Anarchy In The U.K. and Scream Dream together makes rather shocking sense! I also like how AIC's Rain When I Die leads directly into the violent thunderstorm sound effects which o-pen The Who's Doctor Jimmy, from Quadro-phenia (1973).The problem that I see is, it all seems to be like a set of really good sequences that doesn't really gel into a cohesive whole. And I'm also dissatisfied with having to use an acoustic Heart instrumental - even though it's rather pretty - as padding to shore up Disc #1's running time past my 78-minute minimum, because I'm not really all that satisfied it fits! But I don't know, maybe others of you out there might feel differently!
One thing's for sure, I think my o-pening and closing sequences are certainly more than passable. The first four tracks on Disc #2 make for an infernal heavy-rock firestorm that I'm actually rather proud of, and I think the two ballads from the Manics and Hanoi that close Disc #1 work alright together. However, when it came to the conclusion of Disc #2, I wasn't really all that sure which song should have come first and which one should have been the closer: ELP(owell)'s Lay Down Your Guns or Cult rarity Join Hands. I think it works fine as it is, but I think it certainly could have worked the other way...
Even though I don't necessarily think it all gels together, there's certainly some good stuff here: A Neil Young cover from Jesse Malin's first band D Generation...a wistful number from psychedelic-era Floyd, penned by keyboardist Rick Wright...a menacing up-tempo rocker from late Who bassist John Entwistle (R.I.P.)...Stones and Aerosmith numbers sung by guitarists Keith Rich-ards and Joe Perry...and more!
And I know there are a few numbers here which would definitely meet with the approval of KathrynandRupert, and to whom they are dedicated. They'll know which ones! :-)
Well, the next mix is going to mark my big Seven-Oh, so I'm planning on making it something extra-special. It's already taking form in my mind even as I type this out! The only problem is: I've got to take a break eventually, otherwise how in the hell am I gonna get around to listening to the mixes Captain Hi-Top sent me?! [*wink*]
