Comment:
A simple mix for a simple man, my Grandpa August. He was born in 1908 and died 5 years ago yesterday. I was not necessarily inspired by tornadoZ's fine effort for his grandmother, it pretty much came from the anniversary of his death and some thoughts from a recent visit with my other Grandpa.Grandpa was full of, in the words of Jack Nicholson, country witticisms. When he would show his wedding picture, he would say "that's the day I went to war." It was that sentiment that inspired me to pick the Hank and the last Prine. I must add that the first Prine also reminds me of my Grandma (pictured below) because she was a teacher, the first in her family to go to college, and bilingual German-English. On the other hand, Grandpa was a farmboy who had to leave school in the eighth grade when his dad got sick.Grandpa was not that interested in music, the most I ever saw was him watching Hee Haw, but that was more for the boobs than anything else, but good enough reason to include three songs from there. And I figured the Dylan/Cash duet was a good substitute for the Grandpa Jones original. He also liked the gospel shows on the Larry Rice channel, so two of those Hee Haw tunes killed both birds. Grandpa was a life-long Mason, though, and was the kind of man who was a Republican because Lincoln won the war. I remember that when spoke of my great-grandpa, his words sounded like that Jimmie Rodgers song. But, as you can tell, what Grandpa really liked was fishing. These are a few of my favorite fishing tunes, and that Hoagy Carmichael pretty much sums up Grandpa's outlook on life. The title comes from Grandpa's reaction to losing one of his grandchildren, my older cousin David, who died suddenly at 38.And the only song I haven't mentioned is the one that I quoted at Grandpa's funeral, when I said that we should strap ourselves to the tree with roots...Feedback:
beautiful derek.
thank you for sharing your family through story and music - as an outsider, i sense quite a bit of inspiration in the presentation with that of the other contributors mix about their grandmother - it does not take away from the uniqeness and power of what you have to offer in any way - it's all awesome!
A lovely bit of family history. Keep on fishing grandpa wherever you are.
This is nice.
Your grandfather must have been a really great person. Great tribute. That Hank Williams track is a favourite.
He had a very good innings. And this is a very good tribute to Grandpa August. Beautiful..
Interesting that my favorite grandfather was a mason, too, though he didn't care for fishing. Neither do I (fish, that is) but that didn't stop me from listening to this mix. Nice effort.
this is really touching, derek, some really beautiful choices really enhance the sentiment behind this.
Lovely & like anthony said, touching mix.
loved the Leon Redbone, Hoagy Carmichael, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams and that great Archie Campbell & Gordie Tap tune that set me right back in the middle of that Hee-Haw cornfield. very nice tribute, Derek. I'm sure August and Sadie are best friends by now.
Daddy,Today, I remember that day as if it was yesterday and I was only 7 years old! You and your sis were late and still it was so quick. Daddy I was so sad and scared! Daddy always remember that you can always count on me and Ika! Love you always,Doowadette
Beautifully mixed and stated. Love the whole stringer from 6-14.
Just wonderful. Great Dylan/Cash and Prine especially.
Nicely done.
He looks like a rad dude and this like a rad tribute.
Love this mix, the whole gosh-darned thing!
Derek,
Thank you for taking the time to make this mix in memory of our grandpa. Funny that you did such a great job creating a mix that perfectly portrayed a man who did not listen to much music. I know he would have enjoyed sitting and listening to this with you. Thanks again Derek, for giving us all an opportunity to take a minute and remember Grandpa August!
Love, AnnieBananie

The sentiments behind all of this are wonderful, and your choices excellent. I enjoyed reading your notes - a generally lovely mix.
