In my younger days, I worked in record stores and also for a music distributor. The most important day of the week was always Tuesday, when the new releases would hit the shops. To this day, I still haunt my favorite independent record stores on Tuesdays and usually come away with three or four just-out albums to pop in the car stereo. This will be an ongoing series - at least as long as I've got money to spend - of a month's worth of new music.

Side (or disc) two starts with four live tracks in a row and has a cut from Blue Magic's reissue as its next-to-last track. But those count since their release dates were this past month. If you were to consider buying any of these albums, I'd heartily recommend Cat Power, Greg Brown and Grace Potter. No need to hype Black Mountain as everyone's hopped on that bandwagon.

Notes on the artists and tracks
1 Brooklyn band Yeasayer has more than a little Fleetwood Mac influence (the Buckingham-Nicks version). All Hour Cymbals is their current release.
2 With an album title like The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nation's Millenium General Assembly who knew what to think? This album of home recordings inhabits a similar realm as Sufjan Stevens' material. 3 Two of the Portico Quartet play an instrument called "The Hang," which is kind of like a steel drum played with the fingers. Very intriguing music on Knee-Deep in the North Sea 4 This Vancouver band released a second album called Wildfires. They seem to have discovered their inner Crazy Horse. 5 Sounds like Gram Parsons fronting The Blasters on Gleason's Just Fall To Pieces release. 6 The former Catatonia singer recorded this partially Welsh language album (Awyren=Aeroplane) in Nashville. 7 The anonymous (no name, no press, no info) Burial released his/her/its second album - Untrue - and it's the anti-club, club music of its predecessor, only better.
8 One-drop reggae has lately had a growing focus on songcraft, and I-Wayne is a fine example with his Book of Life album.
9 When Fela Kuti refused to cut Allen in on a royalty deal, he went out on his own with Afrika 70. Afro-Disco Beat should be a classic for this genre.
10 Part of Mike Patton's Peeping Tom band, Coppola is a failed pop star whose Black and White album recalls Gwen Stefani with ghetto chic.
11 Another entry in the Fiona Apple longest album title contest, I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me From Being The Master is the latest offering from Electric Six. There's plenty of sting here for targets like McDonald's, drug addicts, women and Lenny Kravitz.
12 Turn the bedroom lights down low on this one from Philly soul queen Jill Scott (The Real Thing).
13 Grace and her gang of Vermonters express their love for Neil Young with an album title like This Is Somewhere. This is a very good record and catch them live if you have the chance. You will not be disappointed.
On disc two
1 This album came from a recent reunion tour for Sid Griffin (on hiatus from The Coal Porters) and the fringe-jacketed boys.
2 An unplugged album in the series from Radio 1's Live Lounge. Arctic Monkeys sound like they're having a barrel of laughs.
3 Hardly anyone makes dry pithy observations to acoustic guitar like Greg Brown, and Yellow Dog is a fine example of his live act. 4 Raise your hand if you thought Gene Clark was dead and gone. In Concert comprises a couple of shows from the late `80s with Carla Olson backing vocals.
