Comment:

The term "Krautrock" itself is as derogatory as it is incorrect(German bands took no offense or at least gave notice that they didn't). Originally coined by English critics, it denoted experimental rock made by Germans from early to mid '70's. Except, a lot of the music didn't fit the "rock" tag as it was venturing into territory previously covered - if, at all - by improvisation, electronic experimentation and non-western ("ethnic") instrumentation. In short, the more radical part of the German babyboomer generation was fiercely denouncing the cultural heritage of its parents (tainted by war and Nazi mischief) while at the same time pioneering a new musical and social esthetic that rejected the Anglo-American "rock" thing. Partly by installing a sense of humor, the music avoided the pomposity plaguing British and American "progressive" rock. With hindsight, it was also a more important contribution to the recognizably artistic edge of popular culture, a contribution whose influence has resurfaced repeatedly, most notably in the works of Eno and the Berlin era recordings of Bowie and Iggy Pop, the post punk sounds and recently in the sounds of Aphex Twin, Stereolab and Tortoise to name a few. Tape covers some some of the key players from the "KrautRock" golden age. Missing is Neu!(which sadly has vanished from my record vault or is deeply hidden) and Harmonia (who is on my want list).

Brilliant, yet again. I've been working on a German mix myself, to include some of these artists, but mainly focusing on the newer movements in that country.

Not sure if I ever told you how much I enjoyed "Ee." This series gets better and better. Ditto on the suggestion you publish this or something. You have to put all these comments together when you get through the alphabet.
